Power converter circuitry and method

Abstract

A system is disclosed for controlling a plurality of pulse-width-modulated switching power converters. The system includes a sample and hold circuit which is configured to receive information at time-separated intervals. The information the sample and hold circuit receives includes information which is indicative of the performance of the power converters. In some embodiments, the sample and hold circuit takes samples of data from each of the switching power converters and provides information to an analog to digital conversion circuit coupled to the sample and hold circuit. In one embodiment, the plurality of pulse-width-modulated switching power are configured to independently provide power to unrelated loads.

5 claims: 1 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 2004047260 A2 We claim :1. A switching power converter comprising: a ring oscillator made up of a plurality of series connected inverters;a feedback loop from the output lead of the last inverter in the series to the input lead of the first inverter in the series;a selected circuit capable of selecting at least one output signal from an inverter in said string of series connected inverters;and an exclusive OR gate receiving said selected output signal on one input lead and a reference output signal from an output lead of inverter in said string of inverters on the other input lead.
  2. 2
Structure as in Claim 1 wherein said exclusive OR gate produces an output signal having a time duration proportional to the number of inverters between the inverters providing to output signals to said exclusive OR gate .
  3. 3
Structures in Claim 2 wherein the duty cycle of the output signal from said exclusive OR gate can vary from 0 to close to 100%.
  4. 4
Structures in Claim 1 wherein the frequency of oscillation of said ring oscillator is equal to 1 over 2nΔ, where n is the number of inverters in said string of series- connected inverters, and Δ is the time delay of a signal passing through each of said inverters.
  5. 5
Structures in Claim 5 wherein the period of said oscillations of said ring oscillator is 2nΔ.
