Power converter circuitry and method

Abstract

A system is disclosed for controlling a plurality of pulse-width-modulated switching power converters. The system includes a sample and hold circuit which is configured to receive information at time-separated intervals. The information the sample and hold circuit receives includes information which is indicative of the performance of the power converters. In some embodiments, the sample and hold circuit takes samples of data from each of the switching power converters and provides information to an analog to digital conversion circuit coupled to the sample and hold circuit. In one embodiment, the plurality of pulse-width-modulated switching power are configured to independently provide power to unrelated loads.

Claims of equivalent WO 2004047263 A2 We claim:1. In a system for controlling a switching power converter circuit having a battery coupled to the converter circuit for charging a capacitor to voltage and maintaining the voltage on the capacitor within a predetermined voltage range defined by an upper and a lower voltage, a method for computing an amount of energy taken from the battery, the method comprising: applying one or more control pulses to the switching power converter circuit to establish a voltage on the capacitor at the upper voltage;periodically sampling a voltage on the capacitor and applying at least one control pulse to the switching power converter circuit to raise the voltage to the upper voltage;computing an amount of energy taken from the battery based on the measured voltage change and a time elapsed.
  2. 2
A circuit comprising:an analog circuit adapted to measure a voltage at two separate input terminals relative to a reference voltage;a counter;and a digital controller, coupled to the analog circuit and the counter, the digital controller adapted to control the counter and the analog circuit to define a time period during which the voltage is easured and convert the voltage measured to a digital value .
  3. 3
The circuit of Claim 2, wherein the analog circuit comprises:an amplifier;a capacitor coupled to the amplifier;and a comparator coupled to the amplifier and the capacitor, the capacitor storing a charge corresponding to the voltage, wherein the time measured by the counter required by the capacitor to dissipate its charge represents the digital value.
  4. 4
The circuit of Claim 2, wherein the circuit determines a location on a touch screen display.
  5. 5
The circuit of Claim 2, wherein the circuit comprises a quad-slope analog-to-digital converter.
  6. 6
A touch screen display circuit comprising:means for measuring a voltage at two separate input terminals which represent a location on a touch screen display where pressure was applied;means for defining a time period during which the voltage is measured;and means for converting the voltage to a digital value .
  7. 7
The circuit of Claim 6, wherein the means for measuring a voltage comprises an amplifier and a capacitor which are configured as an integrator, and the means for converting comprises a counter that measures an amount of time required for the capacitor to dissipate its charge.
