11 claims: 8 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
Use of a composite comprising a substrate and a photocatalytic layer coated thereon, said photocatalytic layer comprising a photocatalytic material selected from the group consisting of TiO 2 in the anatase form, ZnO, SnO 2 , SrTiO 3 , WO 3 , Bi 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 , said photocatalytic layer having a surface which has been rendered hydrophilic by photoexcitation with sunlight, for washing away deposits and/or contaminants adhering on said surface, by occasional contact with rain.
  2. 4
Use according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein said photocatalytic layer further comprises silicone.
  3. 5
Use according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein said photocatalytic layer is further coated with a protective layer which is susceptible to being made hydrophilic.
  4. 6
Use according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein said photocatalytic layer further comprises a metal selected from the group consisting of Ag, Cu and Zn.
  5. 7
Use according to any of claims 1 to 6, wherein said photocatalytic layer further comprises a metal selected from the group consisting of Pt, Pd, Os and Ir.
  6. 8
Use according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein said substrate is made of glass containing alkaline network-modifier ions and wherein a thin film for preventing said ions from diffusing from said substrate into said photocatalytic layer is interleaved between said substrate and said layer.
  7. 9
Use according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein the composite is a mirror, a window glass, a tile or an outer panel of a building.
  8. 11
Use according to any of claims 1 to 10, wherein said photocatalytic layer consists of TiO 2 in the anatase form.
