Using identifiers to establish communication

Abstract

Confusion resulting from assigning the same node identifier to multiple nodes is resolved through the use of confusion detection techniques and the use of unique identifiers for the nodes. In some aspects an access point and/or an access terminal may perform operations relating to detecting confusion and/or providing a unique identifier to resolve confusion. z ou z L) iQ LU W J w U LU [z) _j >z 1 0 Z I- 0 0c L L) ~C-)0 (J w W 0U U)) Zi z LU LU LU L 0 0)00O o 0

  1. 1
CLAIMS:1. A method of communication, including: communicating with a first access point;selecting an identifier of a set of identifiers associated with the first access point;and transmitting the selected identifier to a second access point when establishing communication with the second access point, wherein the set of identifiers includes a first identifier and a second identifier, wherein the second identifier is selected to avoid confusion that may otherwise be caused by use of the first identifier when establishing communication with the second access point, and wherein the access terminal automatically determines when to select the second identifier without instructions by an external node.
  2. 9
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the selection of the identifier is triggered by a loss of communication with the first access point.
  3. 10
An apparatus for communication, including:a communication controller configured to communicate with a first access point;an identifier controller configured to select an identifier of a set of identifiers associated with the first access point;and wherein the communication controller is further configured to transmit the selected identifier to a second access point when establishing communication with the second access point, wherein the set of identifiers includes a first identifier and a second identifier, wherein the second identifier is selected to avoid confusion that may otherwise be caused by use of the first identifier when establishing communication with the second access point, and wherein the access terminal automatically determines when to select the second identifier without instructions by an external node.
  4. 18
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the selection of the identifier is triggered by a loss of communication with the first access point.
  5. 19
An apparatus for communication, including:means for communicating with a first access point;means for selecting an identifier of a set of identifiers associated with the first access point;and means for transmitting the selected identifier to a second access point when establishing communication with the second access point, wherein the set of identifiers includes a first identifier and a second identifier, wherein the second identifier is selected to avoid confusion that may otherwise be caused by use of the first identifier when establishing communication with the second access point, and wherein the access terminal automatically determines when to select the second identifier without instructions by an external node.
  6. 27
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the selection of the identifier is triggered by a loss of communication with the first access point.
  7. 28
A computer-program product, including:computer-readable medium including codes for causing a computer to: communicate with a first access point;select an identifier of a set of identifiers associated with the first access point;and transmit the selected identifier to a second access point when establishing communication with the second access point, wherein the set of identifiers includes a first identifier and a second identifier, wherein the second identifier is selected to avoid confusion that may otherwise be caused by use of the first identifier when establishing communication with the second access point, and wherein the access terminal automatically determines when to select the second identifier without instructions by an external node.
