Hiding and detecting auxiliary data in media materials and signals

Summary by NHIP

Steganographic marking method

The method combines identification data with pseudo-random data to generate a two-dimensional pattern for steganographically marking a substrate. A processor selectively combines specific applied data within the pattern, optionally multiplying identification symbols with pseudo-random data and adding the product to the resulting design.

Abstract

The present technology relates to steganographically hiding messages in materials such as paper stock, plastic and film. The technology can also be used to encode auxiliary data in imagery, which may be separately marked (e.g., by altering values of digital image pixels), or may simply be formed on a marked material.

A method comprising:receiving plural-symbol identification data, each symbol having one of plural values;receiving pseudo-random data;combining the identification data and the pseudo-random data to yield a two-dimensional (2D) pattern, wherein the combining includes applying the identification data and the pseudo-random data to a processor;deciding, by the processor and based on the applied data, to combine certain of the applied data in the 2D pattern, but not to combine other of the applied data in the 2D pattern;and providing data corresponding to the 2D pattern for input to a marking system, to steganographically mark on a substrate.
  2. 11
A method comprising:receiving a string of identification data including data symbols, each symbol having one of plural values;processing the identification data in accordance with pseudo-random data to yield a 2D pattern;steganographically processing a substrate in accordance with the 2D pattern;and marking the substrate with other information, wherein the substrate is marked with the other information at a time different than the steganographic processing of the substrate;wherein the steganographic marking is detectable from visible light scan data captured from the substrate.
  3. 13
A method comprising:generating a two-dimensional array based on pseudo-random data, and on a data series including symbols of first and second values, wherein the generating includes, for each of plural symbols in the data series, adding a datum to the two-dimensional array if the symbol has the first value, and not adding the datum to the array if the symbol has the second value;and marking a substrate with a two-dimensional pseudo-random pattern corresponding to the two-dimensional array.
