Method and apparatus for encoding audio with auxiliary digital data

Abstract

A method of processing audio to convey auxiliary information therewith without audible evidence of audio alteration is provided, in which the audio is represented by digital data, and the auxiliary information comprises a data string having plural bit positions, each with a "1" or "0" value. The method comprises: receiving the plural bit auxiliary data; providing noise data; processing the plural bit auxiliary data and the noise data to yield intermediate data; and summing the intermediate data with the audio data to yield encoded audio; wherein the audio is repeatedly encoded from each of plural non-overlapping excerpts of the encoded audio.

18 claims: 6 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
A method of processing audio to convey auxiliary information therewith without audible evidence of audio alteration, the audio being represented by digital data, the auxiliary information comprising a data string having plural bit positions, each with a "1" or "0" value, characterised in that the method comprises:receiving the plural bit auxiliary data;providing noise data;processing the plural bit auxiliary data and the noise data to yield intermediate data;and summing the intermediate data with the audio data to yield encoded audio;wherein the audio is repeatedly encoded from each of plural non-overlapping excerpts of the encoded audio.
  2. 6
The method of any one of Claims 1 to 5 in which a given bit value at a first bit position has different intermediate data corresponding thereto than the same bit value at a different bit position.
  3. 7
The method of any one of Claims 1 to 5 in which the processing includes selectively inverting the noise data, or not, in accordance with the value of bits in the auxiliary information.
  4. 8
A method of processing audio to decode plural-bit auxiliary data subliminally encoded therein, the audio being represented by digital data, characterised in that the method comprises:providing noise data;demodulating the audio in accordance with the noise data to decode the auxiliary data therefrom;and disabling or enabling a capability of an audio device in accordance with at least some of the decoded auxiliary data.
  5. 12
The method of any one of Claims 8 to 11 in which the demodulating includes performing a dot product operation between two sets of data, a first of said sets being said noise data, the second of said sets corresponding to the audio.
  6. 14
An audio device responsive to a control signal steganographically embedded in audio information to limit use of the device, the control signal taking the form of a low level broadband noise-like signal that has been combined with the audio information, the noise signal encoding the control signal.
