  1. 1
An automatic chemical testing apparatus comprising,:an endless loop conveyor including a plurality of substantially rigid sections connected together, each section including at least one opening for receiving a reaction tube, a reaction tube positioned in each of the openings having a top opening above the top of the conveyor and having a lower closed end extending beneath the opening whereby chemical teste may,be performed as , the tubes are moved along ־various positions as the loop is rotated and where the tubes will be inverted and the contents emptied and the tubes recycled, heating means positioned Inside said loop and movable upwardly for heating the bottom of at least some of said tubes and movable downwardly for allowing the conveyor to rotate, spraying means positioned outside said conveyor for spraying and cleaning tubes which are disposed in a lower portion of the loop, tube drying means positioned outside the conveyor for drying the tubes, power means for rotating said conveyor, sample pick up and dispensing means including a pick up and dispensing conduit, a water filled line connected to the conduit, means connected to the water filled line for hydraulically moving fluid in the water filled line, >ו־ actuating means connected to the fluid moving means for aspiration of a sample into the conduit and line and dispensing measured portions of the aspirated sample into separate reaction tubes which are disposed in an upper portion of the loop, and means connected to the line for flushing water through the line and conduit for cleaning and refilling the line and conduit with water after dispensing the separate samples, means for injecting reagents into tubes which are disposed in an upper portion of the loop, readout means at predetermined tube positions for testing the contents of selected tubes Including, a plurality of cuvettes each in communication with an elongated passageway extending downwardly for insertion into one of the tubes, a movable support supporting said cuvettes for moving said passageways into said tubes and retracting said passageways from the tubes, means for raising and lowering said support means, suction and. dispensing means for aspirating the contents of said tubes into the curettes when the passageways are inserted into the tubes and for expelling the contents of the cuvettes back into the tubes after analyzing the contents. 3233.6/2 ’ readout means for spectrally analyzing the contents of said cuvettes, and automatic for control means/actuating the sample pick up and dispensing means, the injection means, and the readout means«
  2. 2
The apparatus of Claim 1 including, means for creating an air interface in the water filled line between the water and the aspirated sample.
  3. 3
The apparatus of Claim 1 or 2 wherein the means for hydraulically moving fluid in the water filled line includes an aspiration and dispensing cylinder and piston assembly and wherein the actuating means is rigidly connected to the assembly and including, a support for carrying the conduit, a conduit raising and lowering piston and cylinder assembly connected to the support for raising and lowering the conduit, and means for moving the conduit between a sample container and the separate reaction tubes.
  4. 4
The apparatus of Claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein the suction and dispensing means for aspirating the contents of the tubes into the cuvettes and expelling the contents of the cuvettes back into the tubes include, a fill and expel piston and cylinder assembly connected to each of said cuvettes, and power means connected to each of said pistons for moving the pistons relative to said cylinder. 32316/2 י. .ץ
  5. 5
The apparatus of Claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein the means for injecting reagents into tubes includes, two-way glass check valves, said cheek valves each including, a glass chamber having an inlet, a ground glass valve seat in the chamber about the inlet, a glass valve element positioned in the chamber and longitudinally movable toward and away from the seat, said element having a ground surface for seating on the seat, and means connected between the check valves for drawing reagent through one check valve and dispensing a measured amount of reagent through the second check Valve.
  6. 8
    9. An automatic chemical testing apparatus according to Claim 1 substantially as herein described with reference to the drawings.
