  1. 1
-68- CLAIMS 1. A method for including a code having a plurality of code frequency components with an audio signal, comprising the steps of:producing a first code frequency component having a first frequency;producing a second code frequency component having a second frequency different from the first frequency, the first and second code frequency components being uncombined when produced;assigning a respective amplitude to each of the uncombined first and second code frequency components based on respective abilities of the audio signal to mask the first and second code frequency components;and including the plurality of code frequency components with the audio signal.
  2. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the first and second frequency components are produced in response to data representing one symbol.
  3. 5
An apparatus for including a code having a plurality of code frequency components with an audio signal, comprising:-69- means for producing a first code frequency component having a first frequency;means for producing a second code frequency component having a second frequency different from the first frequency, the first and second code frequency components being uncombined when produced;means for assigning a respective amplitude to each of the uncombined first and second code frequency components based on respective abilities of the audio signal to mask the first and second code frequency components;and means for including a plurality of code frequency components with the audio signal.
  4. 7
An apparatus for including a code having a plurality of code frequency components with an audio signal, comprising:a digital processor having an input for receiving the audio signal, the digital processor being programmed to produce a first code frequency component having a first frequency, to produce a second code frequency component having a second frequency different from the first frequency, the first and second code frequency components being uncombined when produced, to assign a respective amplitude to each of the uncombined first and second code frequency components based on respective abilities of the audio signal to mask the first and second code frequency components, and to include the first and second code frequency components with the audio signal. 1 -70-
  5. 9
The apparatus according to any one of claims 1-4, substantially as herein described with reference to the drawings .
