  1. 1
A method of determining asymmetry in a structure (212) on a sample (101), the method comprising:producing polarized light (202) that is incident on the structure on the sample;analyzing the light (206) after the light is incident on the structure on the sample;detecting the light (208) after analyzing the light;generating with a processor (132) at least a partial Mueller matrix (210) using the detected light;analyzing with the processor the at least the partial Mueller matrix (212) to determine the asymmetry in the structure, wherein analyzing with the processor the at least the partial Mueller matrix to determine the asymmetry of the structure comprises using the anti-symmetric properties of at least one set of anti-symmetric off-diagonal elements of the Mueller matrix for multiple structures having known asymmetries and the at least the partial Mueller matrix to determine the asymmetry of the structure;wherein the at least one set of anti-symmetric off-diagonal elements are cross-polarization reflectance coefficients.
  2. 12
An apparatus for measuring asymmetry of a structure (212) on a sample (101), the apparatus comprising:a polarization state generator (110) for producing polarized light to be incident on the structure;a polarization state detector (114, 118) for analyzing and detecting the light after the light is incident on the structure and for generating signals in response to the detected light;a processor (132) coupled to receive the signals from the polarization state detector wherein the processor is configured to generate at least a partial Mueller matrix (210) using the signals from the polarization state detector and configured for analyzing the at least the partial Mueller matrix to determine the asymmetry of the structure by using the anti-symmetric properties of at least one set of anti-symmetric off-diagonal elements of the Mueller matrix for multiple structures having known asymmetries and the at least the partial Mueller matrix to determine the asymmetry of the structure;wherein the at least one set of anti-symmetric off-diagonal elements are cross-polarization reflectance coefficients.
