  1. 1
A method for early termination of sequential frame transmissions over a communications channel, the method comprising:formatting each frame into a plurality of sequential sub-segments and continuously transmitting (2300) a first frame to a receiver by continuously transmitting the sub-segments of the first frame in sequence to the receiver;receiving an acknowledgment message (2345) from the receiver during the transmitting the first frame;and ceasing transmission of the first frame after receiving the acknowledgment message (2345), characterised in that the acknowledgement message (2345) is received only at predetermined times in accordance with an acknowledgement mask (2340) transmitted by the transmitter to the receiver and which specifies when an acknowledgement message (2345) may or may not be transmitted.
  2. 5
A method for early termination of sequential frame transmissions over a communications channel, the method comprising:continuously receiving a first frame from a transmitter by continuously receiving sub-segments of the first frame in sequence;attempting to decode (2320) the first frame prior to receiving the entire first frame;determining a successful frame decode based on a result of the attempting;and transmitting an acknowledgement message (2345) to the transmitter based on determining the successful frame decode, wherein the acknowledgement message (2345) is operable to cause the transmitter to cease transmission of the first frame, characterised in that transmitting the acknowledgement message (2345) further comprises transmitting only at predetermined times in accordance with an acknowledgement mask (2340) received from the transmitter which specifies when an acknowledgement message (2345) may or may not be transmitted.
  3. 17
An apparatus for early termination of sequential frame transmissions over a communications channel, the apparatus comprising:a transmitter configured to continuously transmit a first frame to a receiver wherein the first frame is formatted into a plurality of sequential sub-segments, the continuously transmitting comprising continuously transmitting sub-segments of the first frame in sequence to the receiver;a receiver module configured to receive an acknowledgment message from the receiver during the transmitting the first frame;and the transmitter configured to cease transmission of the first frame after receiving the acknowledgment message, characterised in that the acknowledgement message is received only at predetermined times in accordance with an acknowledgement mask transmitted by the transmitter to the receiver and which specifies when an acknowledgement signal may or may not be transmitted.
  4. 18
An apparatus for early termination of sequential frame transmissions over a communications channel, the apparatus comprising:a receiver configured to continuously receive a first frame from a transmitter by continuously receiving sub-segments of the first frame in sequence;a processor configured to: attempt to decode the first frame prior to receiving the entire first frame;determine a successful frame decode based on a result of the attempting;and a transmitter module configured to transmit an acknowledgement message to the transmitter based on determining the successful frame decode, wherein the acknowledgement message is operable to cause the transmitter to cease transmission of the first frame, characterised in that the transmitter module is further configured to transmit the acknowledgement message only at predetermined times in accordance with an acknowledgement mask received by the receiver from the transmitter and which specifies when an acknowledgement signal may or may not be transmitted.
