Voice and data wireless communications network, method and access point

Abstract

A wireless local area network that carries mixed traffic of voice and data communications may be provided. The wireless local area network may include an access point and a plurality of remote terminals (T1,T2..T4) that are associated with the access point. The access point may be operably coupled to a wireline network. The access point may receive voice and other communications packets from the remote terminals and the wireline network. Some of the packets may be for transmission to the remote terminals (44). The access point manages which packets to transmit and when to transmit packets (68,88). The access point may manage traffic to maintain a fair distribution of packets and to give priority to voice communications (92) over other communications (94).

  1. 1
A method, comprising:determining a priority level of each of a plurality of packets;arranging the packets from a highest priority level to a lowest priority level;and wirelessly transmitting the packets over a communications medium, wherein packets having the highest priority level are transmitted prior to packets having the lowest priority level.
  2. 14
A system, comprising:a plurality of remote terminals, each terminal including a receiver to receive wirelessly transmitted packets;and an access point receiving the packets from a communication medium, each of the packets having a destination of one of the remote terminals, the access point further determining a priority level of each of the packets, arranging the packets from a highest priority level to a lowest priority level and wirelessly transmitting each packet to the destination remote terminal, wherein packets having the highest priority level are transmitted prior to packets having the lowest priority level.
  3. 29
An access point, comprising:at least one protocol layer to receive packets from a communication medium, each of the packets having a remote terminal destination, the protocol layer further determining a priority level of each of the packets and arranging the packets from a highest priority level to a lowest priority level;and a transmitter to wirelessly transmit each packet to a destination remote terminal, wherein packets having the highest priority level are transmitted prior to packets having the lowest priority level.
  4. 44
A method, comprising:determining a priority level of each of a plurality of packets;arranging the packets from a highest priority level to a lowest priority level;and attempting to wirelessly transmit the packets over a communications medium, wherein packets having the highest priority level are attempted prior to packets having the lowest priority level.
