Voice and data wireless communications network and method

Abstract

A wireless local area network that carries mixed traffic (Fig.5B) of voice and data communications may be provided. The wireless LAN includes an access point with a plurality of remote terminals (1,2,3 in Fig. 2) that are associated with the access point. The access point may be operably coupled to a wireline network and may manage traffic to maintain a fair distribution of packets and to give priority to voice communications over other communications.

CA 02389109 2011-03-02 -31The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows :1. An access point for use in a mixed traffic wireless local area network that includes a plurality of remote terminals that are associated with the access point, where the access point and the remote terminals communicate by transmitting and receiving variable-size communications data packets and voice packets on a halfduplex communications medium that is shared between the access point and the remote terminals, the access point being configured to: receive a plurality of variable size packets including voice packets and data packets from the halfduplex communications medium and from another communications medium with the packets each being addressed to a particular one of the remote terminals;distribute the received packets by transmitting one packet at a time on the half-duplex communications medium when the half-duplex communications medium is available ;determine which one of the remote terminals to transmit to next based on maintaining fair packet distribution among the remote terminals where fairness is determined by the number of packets that have been transmitted to each remote terminal;and determine which packet to transmit next from the received packets that are addressed to the remote terminal to which the access point is to transmit next based on: giving priority to voice packets by transmitting received voice packets that are I 2217863.12211023.1 CA 02389109 2011-03-02 -32addressed to a particular terminal before transmitting data packets that are addressed to that particular terminal, and an order of reception of the packets that are addressed to the remote terminal to which the access point is to transmit to next, so that the access point treats all the remote terminals fairly while giving priority to voice packets.
  2. 7
The access point claim 6, wherein the access point is further configured to:use frequency hopping spread spectrum radio communications to communicate on the half-duplex communications medium;and after a predetermined number of retransmissions, delay further retransmission until after a frequency hop.
  3. 12
The access point claim 11, wherein the plurality of queues are of equal size.
  4. 16
The access point claim 15, wherein the access point is further configured to determine which packets are for voice packets based at least partly on 2217863.1224402-A4CA 02389109 2011-03-02 -35the determined communication protocol being user datagram protocol.
  5. 21
A communication system comprising the access point defined in claim 1, further comprising:a plurality of remote terminals that are associated with the access point. 2217863.12211023.1 CA 02389109 2011-03-02
  6. 22
An access point that provides voice and data communications for use in a wireless local area network having a plurality of mobile units, the access point being configured to:receive signals carrying communications packets directed to particular mobile units;prioritize the communications packets for transmission based on: whether a current packet is a voice communication packet;the total number of packets transmitted to each mobile unit;and the order in which the packets were received by the access point.
  7. 23
A method for providing voice and data communications for use in a wireless local area network having an access point and a plurality of mobile units, comprising :receiving signals at the access point which carry communications packets directed to particular mobile units;prioritizing the communications packets for transmission based on: whether a current packet is a voice communication packet;the total number of packets transmitted to each mobile unit;and the order in which the packets were received by the access point.
  8. 24
A transmitter for use in a carrier sense I 2217863.12211023.1 CA 02389109 2011-03-02 -37multiple access communications system, the transmitter being configured to:receive signals carrying communications packets directed to particular receiver units;prioritize the communications packets for transmission based on: whether a current packet is a voice communication packet;the total number of packets transmitted to each receiver unit;and the order in which the packets were received by the transmitter;use a contention window of a first duration for transmitting packets that are for voice communications;and use another contention window of a second duration that is different from the first duration for transmitting other packets.
  9. 28
A method for transmitting packets for use in a carrier sense multiple access communications systems, comprising:2217863.122110211CA 02389109 2011-03-02 -38receiving signals which carry communications packets directed to particular receiver units;prioritizing the communications packets for transmission based on: whether a current packet is a voice communication packet;the total number of packets transmitted to each mobile unit;and the order in which the packets were received by the access point;using a contention window of a first duration for transmitting packets that are for voice communications;and using another contention window of a second duration that is different from the first duration for transmitting other packets.
  10. 32
A method, comprising:determining a priority level of each of a plurality of packets in periodic intervals, the priority level based on a voice-capability of the remote terminal to which each of the plurality of packets is directed, whereupon voice packets directed to a voice-capable remote terminal are given a higher priority level than data packets;and wirelessly transmitting the packets in onepacket-per-terminal rounds over a communications medium with packets having higher priority levels being transmitted prior to packets having lower priority levels, wherein a highest priority packet for each of a plurality of remote terminals is transmitted in each round.
  11. 47
A system, comprising:a plurality of remote terminals, each terminal including a receiver to receive wirelessly transmitted packets;and an access point receiving the packets from a communication medium, each of the packets having a destination remote terminal, the access point further determining a priority level of each of the packets in periodic intervals, the priority level based on a voicecapability of the destination remote terminal to which each of the packets is directed, whereupon voice packets directed to a voice-capable remote terminal are given a higher priority level than data packets, and wirelessly 2217863.12211023.1 CA 02389109 2011-03-02 -42transmitting each packet in one-packet-per-terminal rounds to the destination remote terminal with packets having higher priority levels being transmitted prior to packets having lower priority levels, wherein a highest priority packet for each- of the remote terminals is transmitted in each round.
