12 claims: 9 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A method of fabricating ordered patterns of nanoscale objects on a substrate (400), comprising:applying (1010) a layer of resist material (410) to a substrate surface (430);stamping (1020) an imprint mold (300) onto the resist layer, wherein the mold is patterned with nanoscale features;releasing (1030) the imprint mold to provide a template (500) having a template surface formed into the resist layer and having nanoscale openings (610, 620, 630) formed therein;selectively removing (1040) residual resist material (710) from the template openings to expose the substrate;applying (1050) a set of nanoscale objects to the template surface in a manner to cause the nanoscale objects to be proximal to the substrate surface through the nanoscale openings, wherein the nanoscale objects are selected from nanowires, nanoparticles, nanorods, nanotubes, proteins, DNA, polynucleic acids or polypeptides and at least one of the nanoscale objects (920) remains outside the template openings;and removing the at least one nanoscale object remaining outside the template openings, wherein the size and shape of a template opening is configured to accommodate a particular size and/or shape of a nanoscale object.
  2. 4
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the template is configured to be removed from the substrate without removing the nanoscale objects.
  3. 5
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the template is configured to accommodate the growth of nanoscale objects through the openings.
  4. 7
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the size and shape of at least one of the openings are chosen so as to exclude nanoscale objects of a particular size range.
  5. 8
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the size and shape of at least one of the openings (2120, 2130, 2140) are chosen to accommodate a plurality of nanoscale objects of a particular size in one opening (2120), and to accommodate nanoscale objects of another size in another opening (2130, 2140).
  6. 9
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the size and shape of at least one of the openings are chosen to accommodate a specific maximum number of nanoscale objects.
  7. 10
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the size and shape of at least one of the openings are chosen to accommodate nanoscale objects of different sizes within separate levels within an opening.
  8. 11
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the size and shape of at least one of the openings (2120, 2130, 2140) are chosen to have multiple levels with different sized openings at different levels.
  9. 12
A method according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said nanoscale objects (2350, 2360) provide an electrical connection to the substrate.
