  1. 1
A method for determining the position of a mobile wireless transceiver (20, 26), the method comprising:receiving at a base station (10,11) a first signal transmitted from a first GPS satellite (60, 70, 80, 90) and a second signal transmitted from a second GPS satellite (60, 70, 80, 90);receiving at the mobile wireless transceiver (20,26) in wireless communication with said base station (10,11) said first and second signals and transmitting a third signal to said base station (10,11) in response thereto, said third signal including pseudo-ranges for the first and second GPS satellites;and receiving said third signal at said base station (10,11);characterised by : determining a distance between said mobile wireless transceiver (20,26) and said base station (10,11);and calculating the position of said mobile wireless transceiver (20,26) in dependence upon said received third signal by utilizing the pseudo-ranges and the determined distance of said mobile wireless transceiver (20,26) from said base station (10,11).
  2. 2
The method of Claim 1, further including sending aiding information from said base station (10,11) to said wireless transceiver (20,26).
  3. 3
The method of Claim 2, further including using said aiding information at said wireless transceiver (20, 26) to acquire said first and said second signals.
  4. 4
The method of Claim 3, wherein said aiding information includes satellite identification information, Doppler shift information, and a first set of range information between said base station (10,11) and said satellites (60, 70, 80, 90).
  5. 5
The method of Claim 4, wherein said third signal includes a second set of range information between said wireless transceiver (20, 26) and said satellites (60, 70, 80, 90) and time information t x .
  6. 6
A system for determining a position of a mobile wireless transceiver, the system comprising:means for receiving at a base station (10,11) a first signal transmitted from a first GPS satellite (60, 70, 80, 90) and a second signal transmitted from a second GPS satellite (60, 70, 80, 90);means for receiving at the mobile wireless transceiver (20, 26) in wireless communication with said base station (10,11), said first and second signals and means for transmitting a third signal to said base station (10, 11) in response thereto, said third signal including pseudo-ranges for the first and second GPS satellites;and means for receiving said third signal at said base station (10,11);characterised by : means for determining a distance between said mobile wireless transceiver (20, 26) and said base station (10,11);and means for calculating the position of said mobile wireless transceiver (20, 26) in dependence upon said received third signal by utilizing the pseudo-ranges and the determined distance of said mobile wireless transceiver (20,26) from said base station (10,11).
  7. 7
The system of Claim 6, further comprising means for sending aiding information from said base station (10,11) to said wireless transceiver (20,26).
  8. 8
The system of Claim 7, further including means for using said aiding information at said wireless transceiver (20, 26) to acquire said first and said second signals.
  9. 9
The system of Claim 8, wherein said aiding information includes satellite identification information, Doppler shift information, and a first set of range information between said base station (10,11) and said satellites (60, 70, 80, 90).
  10. 10
The system of Claim 9, wherein said third signal includes a second set of range information between said wireless transceiver (20, 26) and said satellites (60, 70, 80, 90) and time information t x .
  11. 12
A computer program embodied on a computer readable medium comprising computer program code for performing the method of any of claims 1 to 5 when said program is run on a computer.
