27 claims: 11 independent, 16 dependent

  1. 1
A dialysis system (10) comprising:a fluid supply line for supplying dialysis fluid;a disposable unit (160) in fluid communication with the fluid supply line, the disposable unit (160) having at least two flexible membranes (162, 164) secured together at selected locations and which define a fluid pump receptacle (172);a patient line in fluid communication with the disposable unit (160);a drain line in fluid communication with the disposable unit (160);a pump actuator (24) that moves the fluid pump receptacle (172);a heater (16) that heats the dialysis fluid;and a hardware unit (110) including an enclosure defining an interior and including the pump actuator (24), the heater (16), and a pump shell, the disposable unit (160) being removably positioned within the interior of the enclosure so that the pump receptacle (172) forms a pump chamber (210) with the pump shell of the hardware unit (110), and wherein the motor-driven pump actuator (24) includes a piston-head configured to pneumatically attach to one of the flexible membranes (162, 164) and wherein the motor-driven pump actuator (24) is configured to mechanically move the pump receptacle (172) of the disposable unit (160) with respect to the pump shell of the enclosure and pull the pneumatically-attached one of the flexible membranes (162, 164) away from the other of the flexible membranes (162, 164).
  2. 4
The dialysis system (10) of any preceding claim, wherein the heater (16) includes a heating plate.
  3. 5
The dialysis system (10) of any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the heater (16) includes an infrared heating source.
  4. 6
The dialysis system (10) of any preceding claim, wherein the fluid heating pathway (180) and the heater (16) define an in-line heater.
  5. 10
The dialysis system (10), of any one of Claims 8 to 9, wherein the hardware unit (110) includes a display device (40) that provides dialysis system information.
  6. 14
The dialysis system (10) of any preceding claim, wherein the heater (16) includes first and second portions, the disposable unit (160) residing between the portions, and the membranes (162,164) in the region of the fluid heating pathway (180) expanding upon receiving dialysis fluid so that one membrane (162) contacts the first portion and another membrane (164) contacts the second portion.
  7. 15
The dialysis system (10) of any one of Claims 1 to 13, wherein the heater (16) has first and second portions spaced apart by a gap which is larger than the thickness of the disposable unit (160) when no dialysis fluid resides in the unit, the dialysis fluid filling at least the fluid heating pathway (180) during use so that the portion of the membranes (162, 164) defining that pathway (180) fill a portion of the gap.
  8. 16
The dialysis system (10) of any of Claims 1 to 15 wherein the at least two flexible membranes (162, 164) of the disposable unit (160) are secured together at selected locations to define a fluid pump receptacle (172) and a fluid heating path (180).
  9. 19
The dialysis system (10) Claim 17 or 18, wherein the first and second membranes (162, 164) of the disposable unit (160) are heat sealed to the rigid member (186) to form at least a part of the valve manifold (190).
  10. 20
The dialysis system (10) of any one of Claims 17 to 19, wherein the first membrane (162) of the disposable unit (160) is pressed against the rigid member (186) to disallow fluid flow through a portion of the valve manifold (190).
  11. 21
The dialysis system (10) of any one of Claims 17 to 20, wherein the valve manifold (190) of the disposable unit (160) includes means for connecting to the supply line, the drain line and the patient line.
