Call detection and handling in multimedia collaboration system

Abstract

A collaboration system that integrates separate real-time and asynchronous networks - the former for real-time audio and video, and the latter for control signals and textual, graphical and other date - in a manner which closely approximates the experience of face-to-face collaboration. These capabilities are achieved by exploiting a variety of hardware, software and networking technologies in a manner that preserves the quality and integrity of audio/video/data and other multimedia information, even after wide area transmission, and at a significantly reduced networking cost as compared to what would be required by presently known approaches. The system architecture is readily scalable to the largest enterprise network environments. It accommodates differing levels of collaborative capabilities available to individual users and permits high-quality audio and video capabilities to be readily superimposed onto existing personal computers and workstations (12) and their interconnecting LAN's (10) and WANs (15). In the case of a plurality of geographically dispersed LANs (10) interconnected by a WAN (15), the demands made on the WAN are significantly reduced by employing multi-hopping techniques, including avoiding the unnecessary decompression of data at intermediate hops, as well as video mosaicing and cut-and-past technology.

  1. 1
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (20, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said workstations (12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) an incoming call acceptance mechanism (160) for detecting an incoming teleconference call, initiated by a first participant, at the workstation (12) of a second participant and, if said second participant is engaged in an active teleconference call, invoking telephone mode, whereby said second participant is notified of and provided with the option of accepting said incoming teleconference call.
  2. 7
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (200, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said workstations (12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) an add participant selection mechanism (160) for selecting a new participant from among a plurality of potential participants and adding said new participant to an active teleconference call.
  3. 8
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (200, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said workstations (12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) an incoming call handling mechanism (160) for detecting, during a first teleconference call between a first and second of said participants, an attempt by a new caller to initiate a second teleconference call to said second participant, and for notifying said second participant that said new caller is attempting to call said second participant;and(b) an incoming call acceptance mechanism (160) for adding said new caller to said first teleconference call.
  4. 9
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (200, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said workstations(12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) a remote participant hold selection mechanism (160, 203) for placing on hold, in a videoconference call among a hold-activating participant and a plurality of other participants, at least one of said other participants.
  5. 10
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (200, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said workstations (12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) a remote participant disconnection mechanism (160, 203) for disconnecting, in a teleconference call among a participant to be remotely disconnected and a plurality of other participants, at least one of said other participants.
