Participant location in multimedia collaboration system

Abstract

A collaboration system that integrates separate real-time and asynchronous networks - the former for real-time audio and video, and the latter for control signals and textual, graphical and other data - in a manner which closely approximates the experience of face-to-face collaboration. These capabilities are achieved by exploiting a variety of hardware, software and networking technologies in a manner that preserves the quality and integrity of audio/video/data and other multimedia information, even after wide area transmission, and at a significantly reduced networking cost as compared to what would be required by presently known approaches. The system architecture is readily scalable to the largest enterprise network environments. It accommodates differing levels of collaborative capabilities available to individual users and permits high-quality audio and video capabilities to be readily superimposed onto existing personal computers and workstations (12) and their interconnecting LANs (10) and WANs (15). In the case of a plurality of geographically dispersed LANs (10) interconnected by a WAN (15), the demands made on the WAN are significantly reduced by employing multi-hopping techniques, including avoiding the unnecessary decompression of data at intermediate hops, as well as video mosaicing and cut-and-paste technology.

  1. 1
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (200, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said workstations (12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) an AV path (13b, 14) for carrying AV signals among said workstations (12), said AV signals representing video images and/or spoken audio of said participants;(b) an AV conference manager (63) for managing a videoconference during which the video image and spoken audio of one of said participants is reproduced at the workstation (12) of another of said participants;and(c) a participant locator (62, 63, 160) which associates a first workstation (12) with a first of said participants having a participant identifier, said identifier entered when said first participant logs into said first workstation (12), whereby a call to initiate a videoconference with said first participant is routed to said first workstation (12).
  2. 7
A teleconferencing system for conducting a teleconference among a plurality of participants having workstations (12) with associated monitors (200) for displaying visual images, and with associated AV capture (500, 600) and reproduction (200, 700) capabilities for capturing and reproducing video images and spoken audio of said participants, said workstations (12) being interconnected by a first network (902), said network (902) providing a data path (13a, 14) for carrying digital data signals among said (12), the teleconferencing system comprising:(a) an AV path (13b, 14) for carrying AV signals among said workstations (12), said AV signals representing video images and/or spoken audio of said participants;(b) an AV conference manager (63) for managing a videoconference during which the video image and spoken audio of one of said participants is reproduced at the workstation (12) of another of said participants;(c) a participant locator (62, 63, 160) which associates a first workstation (12) with a first of said participants having a participant identifier, said identifier entered when said first participant logs into said first workstation (12), whereby a call to initiate a videoconference with said first participant is routed to said first workstation (12);and(d) a plurality of switches (30), in communication with the (13b, 14) and data (13a, 14) paths, each switch being operable to put at least one workstation in communication with both the AV and data paths, whereby a teleconference can be established between any two or more participants out of a total pool of at least 100 participants.
