Applicator for flowable materials

Abstract

The present invention relates to an applicator for flowable materials which comprises a generally cylindrical housing having a chamber, a discharge opening, a wick projecting through said discharge opening, and a projecting structure for shielding the user from flowable materials and for preventing placement of the applicator in inappropriate receptacles. Further, the present invention relates to a storage and shipping rack for said applicators and to a method of dispensing flowable materials onto a surface. Preferably, the applicator is filled with metal coating and treating compositions such as aqueous acidic chromate compositions. Most preferably, the acidic compositions contain a very low concentration of a fluorinated surfactant.

An applicator for dispensing a flowable material onto a surface to be coated with the flowable material, which comprises: a) a housing having a chamber therein, said housing having an end wall that is formed with a discharge opening in communication with said chamber through which flowable material can be dispensed;b) means for controlling the dispensing of said flowable material through said discharge opening, and for applying dispensed material onto a surface, and c) a guard structure disposed on and extending about said housing for inhibiting the insertion of said applicator into a garment pocket or other inappropriate place.
  2. 13
A manually operable applicator for applying a liquid conversion coating onto a surface to be coated with said liquid, that comprises:a) a housing having a chamber therein, said housing having upper and lower ends, said lower end being formed with a discharge opening that is in communication with said chamber and through which opening said liquid can be dispensed;b) means disposed in said opening for applying dispensed liquid onto a surface, and c) a guard structure disposed on and extending about said housing for limiting unintentional contact with said liquid that is being dispensed.
  3. 17
An applicator for a potentially corrosive liquid conversion coating, said applicator being designed for dispensing said conversion coating onto a conversion coated metal surface in a region where that surface has been scratched, to repair the conversion coating, comprising a generally cylindrical housing having a chamber therein, said housing having upper and lower ends, and said lower end being formed with a dispensing opening that is in communication with said chamber and through which conversion coating liquid in said chamber can be dispensed;an elongate body of a foraminous wick disposed in said dispensing opening and projecting into said chamber, and through which said liquid conversion coating can pass for dispensing onto a scratched area of the surface of a conversion coated metal, and a guard collar that is mounted on said housing and is disposed intermediate said gripping region and said wick dispenser, to provide protection for the user of the applicator against said conversion coating liquid, during use of the applicator.
  4. 20
An applicator for dispensing a coating liquid onto a scratched area of a coated metal surface to cover the scratch and to repair the coating on said surface, which comprises:a) a generally cylindrical housing having a chamber therein, said housing having upper and lower ends, said upper end having an aperture that provides communication between said chamber and the exterior of said housing to provide an input port, and said lower end having a discharge opening through which said coating liquid can be dispensed;b) a spring disposed within said chamber;c) a sealing member depending from said spring and engaging said discharge opening, whereby said spring constantly urges said sealing member to a position that closes said discharge opening, thereby preventing communication between said chamber and the exterior of said housing;d) a wick attached to said sealing member and projecting through said discharge opening, whereby when said wick is engaged against a surface with a force greater than the force applied by said spring, said sealing member is moved from said position in which it closes said discharge opening, thereby allowing for communication between said chamber and the exterior of said housing;e) a circular collar of substantially larger diameter than said housing, extending radially outward from said housing for inhibiting the insertion of said applicator into a garment pocket or other inappropriate receptacle;and f) a cap releasably attached to said lower end of said housing for covering said wick and thereby effectively closing off said discharge opening to prevent unintended or accidental contact with said coating liquid.
  5. 21
A manual method for repairing a damaged area of a coated metal surface, comprising:a) introducing a liquid coating into a reservoir of an applicator, said applicator having means for dispensing said coating and applying it to a damaged area of a coated metal surface, b) said applicator having an outwardly projecting guard structure, that permits observation of the application of said liquid coating, c) contacting said dispensing means with said damaged area to apply said liquid coating over said damaged area to repair the coating on said damaged area, and d) observing said application as the liquid coating is applied.
  6. 34
A method for repairing a damaged or scratched area of a conversion coated metal surface, comprising introducing a liquid conversion coating having hazardous characteristics into the reservoir of an applicator, having means for dispensing said coating and applying it to the scratched or damaged area of a conversion coated metal surface, and contacting said dispensing means with said damaged area to apply said liquid coating over said damaged area to repair the conversion coating on said damaged area, said liquid conversion coating comprising an aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid and/or esters thereof, and chromium chromate, and drying said coating without rinsing.
  7. 35
A method for repairing a scratched or damaged area of a conversion coated metal surface comprising manually applying over said scratched or damaged area an amount of a liquid conversion coating normally requiring rinsing wherein said liquid coating comprises a fluorinated surfactant in sufficient quantity to improve the flow of said liquid coating on said scratched or damaged surface and to improve the levelling characteristics of the coating after application, rinsing the newly coated surface to be repaired, and permitting said coating to dry.
  8. 39
A method of improving the flowability of an aqueous acidic coating composition comprising adding to such a composition a functionally effective amount of an acid-stable fluorinated surfactant to improve flow and/or levelling.
  9. 44
A coating composition for forming an aqueous liquid conversion coating on a metal surface, comprising in admixture an aqueous solution of an acidic conversion coating solution having a pH below about 4.5, and a functionally effective amount of an acid-stable fluorochemical surfactant to improve the flowability of said coating.
  10. 53
An applicator for manually applying a liquid coating to a surface which comprises:a housing having a chamber therein providing a reservoir, said housing having an input port for filling said reservoir with said liquid coating, said housing having a discharge opening for said reservoir through which said liquid can be dispensed, a spring disposed within said chamber, a sealing member depending from said spring and engaging in said discharge opening, whereby said spring constantly urges said sealing member into said discharge opening to prevent communication between said reservoir and the exterior of said housing, a liquid conductive wick attached to said sealing member and projecting through said discharge opening, whereby when said wick is engaged against a surface with a force greater than the force applied by said spring, said sealing member disengages from said discharge opening and allows for communication between said reservoir and said wick, for dispensing said liquid onto a surface, and a cap for enclosing said wick and said discharge opening to prevent unintended or accidental contact with said liquid coating.
  11. 55
A rack for storing and transporting dispensing applicators for liquid coatings which comprises a housing supporting a tray having a peripheral edge and having a plurality of cavities formed in said peripheral edge, each said cavity being designed to receive an applicator for storage, wherein said rack and said applicators are formed with complementary means for supporting an applicator in each said cavity.
