To all whom it may concern:

_ Be it known that I, Robert II. Disney, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New 5 Jersey, have inyented certain new and useful ImprovementsinPackingandGuardsfor Stylographic Pens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others io skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to prevent pens, pencils, and the like from rolling from the table or desk, and to guard against the said pens or pencils working from the pocket, and to serve as a washer for pens carrying 20 their own ink, whereby the ink will be more effectually prevented from leaking from the ink-receptacle.

The invention consists in the improved packing and guard for pencils or pens having the 25 arrangements and combinations of parts thereof substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corre30 spending parts in each of the several figures of the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are plans of the improved guard and packing, the latter I showing the preferred form. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through line X of Fig. 1; and 35 Figs. 4 and 5 are views, respectively, of a pencil for the improved guards and a pen of the class referred to, the latter beingpartly in section, to show the improved device as it serves the double function of preventing the pen 40 from rolling off the table or desk and as a packing to prevent the escape of the ink.

In said drawings, a indicates a flat plate, of rubber or similar elastic material, which is cen trally perforated, as at Z>, the perforation being of a size somewhat smaller than that of the 45 pencil or pen with which the packing is to be employed, aud, being elastic, the plate may be easily drawn over the pen or pencil, and will spring back into place in the joint or socket provided for it, or will hold tightly upon the 50 plane of the periphery or face of the pencil, the said plate being preferably of rubber, inasmuch as that material may be employed in erasing the pencil-marks. The outer edges of the plate form inclines c c, whereby the said 55 plate, as it projects at right angles to the pen or pencil, prevents the said pen or pencil from rolling when laid upon an inclined surface. The opposite faces of the plate, or at least one of them, may be provided with a stiffening- 60 ridge, d, which extends around the perforation b, thereby giving stiffness to the plate, the central portion of the plate, however, remaining thin or flange-like, as at e, the flangelike portion being in the plane of the guard, 65 and serving as a packing adapted to be introduced between ends or bearings// of the pen, as in Fig. 5.
