  1. 1
A manuscript reader having a plurality of photosensitive devices receiving incident light from said manuscript and changing their conductive state in accordance with said incident light and a detection circuit for detecting the conductive state of said photosensitive devices;said photosensitive devices comprising a plurality of first electrodes (e.g. 5) formed on an insulating substrate, a photoconductive film of amorphous silicon (e.g. 6) formed over each of said first electrodes, and a plurality of second electrodes (e.g. 7) formed over said photoconductive amorphous silicon film, said first electrodes or second electrodes being transparent and receiving said incident light, the arrangement of said first and second electrodes being such that each of said second electrodes (e.g. 7) overlaps a predetermined number of said first electrodes (e.g. 5), thus constituting a block, the photosensitive devices being arranged in a number of consecutive blocks with each block being separately illuminated and corresponding first electrodes of different blocks being electrically interconnected, and said detection circuit comprising means (226) for comparing a signal from each of said photosensitive devices with a threshold level and converting it into a binary signal and means (221, 222 or 221, 231, 233) for supplying an indepedently settable threshold level for each of the blocks.
