    A compound of the formula where R 1 is -NR 2 R 3 , -N(OR 2 )R 3 , -N 3 , -NHNH 2 , -NX 2 , -NR 10 X, -NXZ or -N=S(O) n R 8 R 9 ;R 2 and R 3 are independently H, alkyl of 1-4 carbons or cycloalkyl of 3-8 carbons;R 5 is R 6 is aryl or alkyl of 1-12 carbons;R 7 is H, alkyl of 1-5 carbons, -CH 2 0H, CH 2 SH, aryl or aralkyl;R 8 and Rg are independently alkyl of 1-4 carbons or, taken together are -(CH2)p-;R, o is alkyl of 1―4 carbons;X is CI or Br;Z is a physiologically acceptable cation;m is 2 or 3;n is 0 or 1;and p is 3, 4 or 5;

    A pharmaceutical composition consisting essentially of a suitable pharmaceutical carrier and an effective antibacterial amount of a compound of any of Claims 2 to 4.

    Use of an effective antibacterial amount of a compound of any of Claims 2 to 4 forthe manufacture of a medicament for alleviating bacterial infection in a mammal.

    A process for resolving 3-phenylamino-1,2-propanediol comprising - in a manner known per se- contacting racemic 3-phenylamino-1,2-propanediol with about 50 to 60 mole percent of optically active mandelic acid to obtain a salt and contacting said salt with base to provide 3-phenylamino-1,2-propanediol enriched in one enantiomer.
