Claim 1: A method of treating a subject with a disease characterized by mucin production, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a composition comprising at least one compound that decreases mucin synthesis or levels in the subject. Claim 20: A therapeutic composition formulated for administration by inhalation to the lungs, comprising an amount effective to decrease the production or levels of mucin, of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of talniflumate, niflumic acid, nephenamic acid, its derivatives, its salts and prodrugs. Claim 21: A therapeutic composition according to claim 20, in which the composition comprises talniflumate, its salts and prodrugs. Claim 24: A therapeutic composition according to claim 20, wherein the composition further comprises at least one expectorant, a mucolytic agent, an antibiotic, or a decongestant agent.
