Radio network control

Abstract

A first session is established for a first mobile access terminal on a first radio network controller via a first radio node. A first traffic channel is established between the first mobile access terminal and the first radio network controller. A first plurality of packets are sent and received over the first traffic channel. The first plurality of packets travel between a first radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through a second radio network controller. The first traffic channel is maintained as the first access terminal moves from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of a second radio node. A second plurality of packets travel between the second radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through another radio network controller. In a radio access network, multiple radio network controllers are connected to several radio nodes using a network. The interconnected radio network controllers and radio nodes are addressable, and, therefore, each radio network controller can communicate directly with each radio node and visa versa. The radio access network can be configured to avoid active handoffs between radio network controllers by maintaining a traffic channel set up between an access terminal and a radio network controller even as the flow.

  1. 1
A method comprising, in connection with a mobile wireless network including a first and a second radio network controller and a first and a second radio node, establishing a first session for a first mobile access terminal on the first radio network confroller via the first radio node, establishing a second session for a second mobile access terminal on the second radio network confroller via the second radio node, establishing a first traffic channel between the first mobile access terminal and the first radio network controller, sending and receiving a first plurality of packets over the first traffic channel, the first plurality of packets traveling between a first radio node and the first radio network confroller without passing through the second radio network controller, maintaining the first fraffic channel as the first access terminal moves from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node, sending and receiving a second plurality of packets over the first fraffic channel, the second plurality of packets traveling between the second radio node and the first radio network confroller without passing through the first radio network confroller, and establishing a new session for the first mobile access terminal on the second radio network controller or performing an inter-RNC dormant handoff from the first radio network controller to the second radio network confroller when the first access terminal is in a dormant state after moving from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node.
  2. 15
The method of claims 1 or 2 further comprising, employing a chassis-based hardware platform with multiple server cards to implement each of the radio network controllers.
  3. 23
A computer program product, tangibly embodied in an information carrier, and adapted to work in a mobile wireless network including a first and a second radio network controller and a first and a second radio node, the computer program product comprising instructions operable to cause data processing apparatus to:5 establish a first session for a first mobile access terminal on the first radio network confroller via the first radio node, establish a second session for a second mobile access terminal on the second radio network controller via the second radio node, establish a first traffic channel between the first mobile access terminal and the 10 first radio network controller, send and receive a first plurality of packets over the first traffic channel, the first plurality of packets traveling between a first radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through the second radio network controller, and maintain the first traffic channel as the first access terminal moves from a 15 coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node, a second plurality of packets fraveling between the second radio node and the first radio network confroller without passing through another radio network confroller.
