  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 2005115026 A2 1. A method comprising, in connection with a mobile wireless network including a first and a second radio network controller and a first and a second radio node, establishing a first session for a first mobile access terminal on the first radio network confroller via the first radio node, establishing a second session for a second mobile access terminal on the second radio network confroller via the second radio node, establishing a first traffic channel between the first mobile access terminal and the first radio network controller, sending and receiving a first plurality of packets over the first traffic channel, the first plurality of packets traveling between a first radio node and the first radio network confroller without passing through the second radio network controller, maintaining the first fraffic channel as the first access terminal moves from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node, sending and receiving a second plurality of packets over the first fraffic channel, the second plurality of packets traveling between the second radio node and the first radio network confroller without passing through the first radio network confroller, and establishing a new session for the first mobile access terminal on the second radio network controller or performing an inter-RNC dormant handoff from the first radio network controller to the second radio network confroller when the first access terminal is in a dormant state after moving from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node.
  2. 15
The method of claims 1 or 2 further comprising, employing a chassis-based hardware platform with multiple server cards to implement each of the radio network controllers.
  3. 23
A computer program product, tangibly embodied in an information carrier, and adapted to work in a mobile wireless network including a first and a second radio network controller and a first and a second radio node, the computer program product comprising instructions operable to cause data processing apparatus to:5 establish a first session for a first mobile access terminal on the first radio network confroller via the first radio node, establish a second session for a second mobile access terminal on the second radio network controller via the second radio node, establish a first traffic channel between the first mobile access terminal and the 10 first radio network controller, send and receive a first plurality of packets over the first traffic channel, the first plurality of packets traveling between a first radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through the second radio network controller, and maintain the first traffic channel as the first access terminal moves from a 15 coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node, a second plurality of packets fraveling between the second radio node and the first radio network confroller without passing through another radio network confroller.
  4. 25
25 25. A mobile wireless network comprising, a first radio network controller, a second radio network confroller, a first radio node, a second radio node, 30 a first mobile access terminal that is associated with a first session established on the first radio network controller via the first radio node and a first fraffic channel established with the first radio network confroller, the first mobile access terminal sending and receiving a first plurality of packets over the first traffic channel, wherein the first plurality of packets travel between a first radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through the second radio network controller, and a second mobile access terminal that is associated with a second session established on the second radio network controller via the second radio node, wherein the first traffic channel is maintained as the first access terminal moves from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of the second radio node, and wherein a second plurality of packets travel between the second radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through the second radio network confroller.
  5. 27
A method for exchanging digital information using mobile access terminals in a wireless network, the method comprising:transmitting packets over a first traffic channel, established between a first mobile access terminal and a first radio network controller, via a first radio node without passing tlirough a second radio network confroller;transmitting packets over a second traffic channel, established between a second mobile access terminal and the second radio network confroller, via a second radio node without passing through the first radio network controller;maintaining the first traffic channel between the first access terminal and the first radio network controller when packets are received from or transmitted to the first access terminal via the second radio node;and transmitting packets received from the first access terminal to an external network.
  6. 54
A radio access network for wirelessly communicating with mobile access terminals, the radio access network comprising:a plurality of radio nodes interconnected with a plurality of radio network controllers using a network, wherein each said radio node can address each said radio network controller and each said radio network controller can address each said radio node;and an interface for exchanging packets between the radio access network and an external network.
