Io all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, James L. Cox, of Moore’s Salt Works, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups; and - I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, io reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved safety-stirrup. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to thatclassof safetystirrups which consist essentially of a bracket having a hinged spring-rod, the point of which 20 enters an opening in the foot-rest, from which it will be disengaged by the foot of the rider should he be thrown; and it consists in the improved construction of the same which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly 25 pointed out in the claim.

In thedrawings hereto annexed, Arepresents the body of my improved stirrup, which consists of a single side piece, B, and thefoot-piece or bracket C, forming the foot-rest, and pro30 vided at its inner free end with a short upward-projecting bracket, D. The side B and foot-rest C are provided with a continuous strengthening-flange, E, so that the foot-rest, although supported at one end only, shall be 35 possessed of sufficient strength to support any weight which may be put upon it without breaking. The side piece, B, has at its upper end an eye or slot, F, for the attachment of the stirrup-strap G-. It is also provided with a trans40 verse perforation, H, in which is hinged a rod or wire, I, made of spring-steel, and having at its lower end an 8 - shaped loop, J, beyond which the point of said spring-rod projects a short distance, as at K. The bracket D of the foot-rest C has at its upper end a flange, L, 45 provided with a recess or perforation, M, to receive the point of the spring-rod I.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood. Should the rider be thrown, his toes in passing upward will press against the 50 spring-rod I, the point of which is thus instantly displaced from the recess M, causing the rod I to swing outward, and instantly releasing the foot from the stirrup. When the spring-rod I is replaced the loop J will retain 55 it in its proper position or prevent it from passing entirely through perforation M, thus giving the rod I an outwardly-curved position to properly accommodate the foot.

This device is simple, inexpensive, and af- 60 fords an absolute safeguard in the manner described.
