SVC/SPVC with L3 IP forwarding

Abstract

In a multi-service network, layer 2 traffic such as IP traffic according to the invention is carried over ATM SVCs or SPVCs. Methods of setting up such connections using the PNNI protocol are also discussed. Using enhancements to the standard ATM SPVC/SVC signaling messages, layer 3 IP routing processes on multi-services switches on opposite ends of the network allow traffic to flow transparently through an underlying layer 2 virtual connection. This provides a simple and efficient way to transport IP packets across an ATM network.

A method of establishing a connection having a first endpoint with Layer-3 IP forwarding in a first multi-service network node, comprising the steps of:a) establishing a second endpoint of the connection at an originating network node;b) sending to the first multi-service network node from the originating network node, a request for establishing the connection;c) automatically routing the connection through any intervening network nodes that are on a selected route between the originating network node and the first multi-service network node;d) receiving the request at the first multi-service network node;and e) establishing the first endpoint at the first multi-service network node, whereby the first endpoint is assigned forwarding information and the forwarding information is added to the forwarding information in the first multi-service network node.
