Method of and apparatus for positioning a magnetic head

Abstract

The present invention is a method and apparatus for positioning a magnetoresistive (MR) head (80) relative to a storage medium (24) in a storage device. The storage medium (24) is mounted in the storage device to allow relative movement between the MR head (80) and the storage medium (24). The storage medium (24) includes servo information (106, 108) provided to induce a thermal response (119) in the MR head (80). A controller (200, 302, 304, 306, 308, 310, 312, 314, 316, 318, 320, 322, 340) controls the relative movement between the MR head (80) and the storage medium (24) using the thermal response (119) induced in the MR head (80).
