Digital processing system where photographic images (421) are digitized and stored in their captured orientation on the film to avoid the need for physical rotation of the film scanner relative to the vertical image film. Each stored image file (421) has an associated presentation control file 422, which contains orientation and aspect ratio information, so that the image playback device will know how each image has been stored on the digital directory, such as a compact disk. When the disc is inserted into a playback device to drive an output display device such as color TV monitor, the playback device can facilitate decoding the playback control information during the readout of the digitized image, so that the image will be displayed in an upright orientation and proper aspect ratio on the display device. .
