    An apparatus for storing and retrieving data that includes circuitry for initiating data transmission, comprising:(A) a first memory;(B) a second memory;(C) a multiline bus for coupling the first and second memories and for carrying control information, addresses, and the data, wherein the multiline bus has a total number of lines less than a total number of bits in any single address, wherein the control information includes information for selecting one of the first and second memories without using any separate memory select line;(D) configuration circuitry for assigning a first identification value to the first memory and a second identification value to the second memory, wherein the configuration circuitry further comprises: (i) a first reset line for coupling the circuitry for initiating data transmission to the first memory;(ii) a second reset line for coupling the first memory to the second memory;(iii) a first identification register tor the first memory, wherein the first identification register is coupled to the first reset line and the multiline bus;(iv) a second identification register for the second memory, wherein the second identification register is coupled to the second reset line and the multiline bus;(v) circuitry for generating a first reset signal and a second reset signal and for sending the first reset signal and the second reset signal to the first identification register of the first memory, wherein the generating circuitry is coupled to the first reset line and the multiline bus, wherein the generating circuitry also generates the first identification value and the second identification value;(vi) circuitry for propagating the first reset signal and the second reset signal from the first identification register of the first memory to the second identification register of the second memory, wherein the propagating circuitry is coupled to the first identification register and the second reset line;(vii) circuitry in each of the first and second identification registers for resetting the first and second identification registers in response to the first reset signal, wherein the resetting circuitry receives the first reset signal in the first identification register from the first reset line and in the second identified register from the second reset line;(viii) circuitry in each of the first and second identification registers for setting the first identification register to the first identification value and the second identification register to the second identification value in response to the second reset signal, wherein the setting circuitry causes the first identification register to receive the first identification value from the generating circuitry via (1) the first reset line or (2) the multiline bus when the first identification register receives the second reset signal via the first reset line, wherein the setting circuitry causes the second identification register to receive the second identification value from the generating circuitry via (1) the first and second reset lines or (2) the multiline bus when the second identification register receives the second reset signal via the second reset line.

    An interfacing circuitry for a first semiconductor circuit in a computer system for selecting the first semiconductor circuit for a device operation in accordance with data, addresses, and control information received from a multiline bus of the computer system in a form of packets, wherein the computer system includes a plurality of semiconductor circuits, including the first semiconductor circuit, wherein the interfacing circuitry is coupled to the multiline bus, wherein the interfacing circuitry resides inside the first semiconductor circuit, wherein the interfacing circuitry comprises:(A) receiving circuitry coupled to the multiline bus for receiving the data, addresses, and control information that are in the form of packets from the multiline bus, wherein the multiline bus has a total number of lines less than a total number of bits in any single address;(B) decoding circuitry coupled to the receiving circuitry for decoding the packets received in the receiving circuitry to identify the data, addresses, and control information, wherein the control information includes a first device identification value for selecting one of the plurality of the semiconductor circuits in the computer system for the device operation, wherein the decoding circuitry decodes the first device identification value from the control information;(C) device identification register circuitry for storing a second device identification value of the first semiconductor circuit;(D) comparator circuitry coupled to the device identification register circuitry and the decoding circuitry for comparing the first and second device identification values, wherein the comparator circuitry receives the first device identification value from the decoding circuitry and the second device identification value from the device identification register circuitry, wherein the comparator circuitry generates a match signal when the first and second device identification values match such that the first semiconductor circuit is selected without a separate device selection line.

    An interfacing circuitry for a first semiconductor circuit in a computer system for selecting the first semiconductor circuit for a device operation in accordance with data, addresses, and control information received from a multiline bus of the computer system in a form of packets, wherein the interfacing circuitry is coupled to the multiline bus, wherein the interfacing circuitry comprises:(A) receiving circuitry coupled to the multiline bus for receiving the data, addresses, and control information that are in the form of packets from the multiline bus, wherein the multiline bus has a total number of lines less than a total number of bits in any single address, wherein the computer system includes a plurality of semiconductor circuits, including the first semiconductor circuit, wherein the interfacing circuitry resides inside the first semiconductor circuit;(B) decoding circuitry coupled to the receiving circuitry for decoding the packets received in the receiving circuitry to identify the data, addresses, and control information;(C) control logic circuitry coupled to the decoder circuitry for controlling device operation of the first semiconductor circuit in accordance with the data, addresses, and control information received from the multiline bus;(D) register circuitry coupled to the decoder circuitry and the control logic circuitry for storing a first value corresponding to a first predetermined time period during which the interfacing circuitry must wait before transmitting reply information through the multiline bus in response to the data, addresses, and control information received, wherein the register circuitry applies the first value to the control logic circuitry to cause the control logic circuitry to wait for the first predetermined time period before accessing the multiline bus for transmitting the reply information.
