Ultrasonic densitometer device and method for its use

Abstract

Apparatus for measuring the physical properties and integrity of a member in vivo (32), and which comprises: ultrasonic transducer means (21) for transmitting an acoustic signal along a path and receiving the signal after its transit along the path; means (42) operable to determine a member transit time of the acoustic signal through a member when the member is positioned in the path, and also to determine a standard material transit time of the acoustic signal through a standard material when the standard material is positioned in the path; means (38) for making a mathematical time comparison of the member transit time to the material transit time; and means (48) for generating an output derived from the mathematical time comparison and relevant to the physical properties of the member.

  2. 2
The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the means for making a mathematical time comparison takes the difference between the member transit time and the material transit time. '
  3. 3
The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the means for making a mathematical time comparison takes the ratio between the member transit time and the material transit time.
  4. 4
The apparatus of Claim 1 including a database means storing a plurality of material transit times indexed according to at least one factor such as age, height, weight, race, and sex of an individual being tested and wherein the means for making a mathematical time comparison obtains the material transit time from the database.
  5. 5
The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the output is derived from the mathematical time comparison and from a mathematical attenuation comparison, and there are further included:90263/6 means operable to determine a member attenuation of at least one frequency component of the acoustic signal through the member when the member is positional on the path, and also to determine a material attenuation of at least one corresponding frequency component of the acoustic signal through a standard material when the standard material is positioned along the path;and means for comparing the member attenuation to the material attenuation in order to generate said mathematical attenuation comparison.
  6. 6
The apparatus of Claim 5, wherein the means operable to determine member attenuation is adapted to transmit one acoustic signal simultaneously incorporating a broad range of frequencies and to determine the attenuation of at least two frequency components of the acoustic signal through the member from the one acoustic signal.
  7. 7
The apparatus of Claim 6, wherein the means for making a mathematical attenuation comparison performs a linear regression on the difference between the member attenuation and the material attenuation.
  8. 8
The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the ultrasonic transducer means comprises a pair of ultrasonic transducers for transmitting and receiving said signal, respectively.
  9. 9
The aparatus of Claim 1, wherein the ultrasonic transducer means comprises a single ultrasonic transducer array for both transmitting and receiving said signal.
  10. 10
The apparatus of Claim 9, wherein a reflecting surface is placed on an opposite side of the member from the ultrasonic transducer array.
