  1. 1
An ultrasonic densitometer for investigating the os calcis in vivo comprising:a transmission ultrasonic transducer array and a reception ultrasonic transducer array spaced from the transmission array so as to receive a heel (32) there between;electrical means connected to the transmission and reception transducer arrays (21) for launching an ultrasonic pulse from the transmission array, sensing the receipt of the pulse to the reception array and measuring the transit time of the pulse passing through the heel (32) when the heel is positioned in the path of the ultrasonic pulse;an electronic means (38) including a microprocessor operating according to a stored program to: (i) select one of a plurality of normal transit times from an electronic database of normal transit times;(ii) make a mathematical comparison of said member transit time of the pulse passing through the heel (32) to the selected normal transit time;and (iii) relate said mathematical comparison to the physical properties and integrity of the os calcis of said heel.
  2. 6
A method for measuring the physical properties and integrity of the os calcis in vivo, comprising the steps of:(a) transmitting an acoustic signal through the heel using a transmission ultrasonic transducer array and a reception ultrasonic transducer array spaced from the transmission array, the transmission array launching an ultrasonic pulse and the reception array receiving the pulse after passage through the heel;(b) determining a heel transit time of the acoustic signal through the heel;(c) selecting one of a plurality of normal transit times from a database of normal transit times;(d) making a mathematical comparison of said heel transit time to the selected normal transit time;and (e) relating said mathematical comparison to the physical properties and integrity of the os calcis.
