    194601/2 CLAIMS:1. A communications system for receiving a modulated signal that carries encoded communications data, comprising: an adaptive filter having an input adapted to receive a sampled input signal 5 carrying the encoded communications data, a finite or infinite impulse response and a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps and weighted coefficients and an adaptive gain circuit adapted to update the adaptive gain of the adaptive filter, wherein a larger gain corresponds to a faster adaptation rate and a smaller gain corresponds to a slower adaptation rate, and wherein the update gain is changed based upon the state of a 10 demodulator and/or type of data modulation thereby reduce undesired multipath channel interference;the demodulator adapted to demodulating the received signal;a decoder adapted to receive the filtered output signal from the adaptive filter and to decode the signal to obtain the communications data;15 an input power measurement circuit adapted to measure power of the input signal and adapted to feed the measured input power to an automatic tap order selection unit for selecting the order of the adaptive and non-adaptive filter taps;an input normalizing circuit adapted to obtain sample values from a received signal input;20 a summer adapted to perform a summation of the output of the plurality of non- adaptive and adaptive filter taps;an output power measurement circuit positioned at the output of the summer, and adapted to feed the measured power to the automatic tap order selection unit;and an output normalizing circuit adapted to obtain sample values from output by 25 the adaptive filter;a variable delay circuit adapted to delay the received signal;and a power based switch adapted for switching the input either directly to a receiving modem or through the adaptive filter depending on the power measurements of the power measurement circuits. -28- 01868934\35-01 194601/2

    The communications system according to Claim 1, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to whether the demodulator is in a preamble search, preamble demodulation or data demodulation state.

    The communications system according to Claim 1, wherein the adaptive 5 gain circuit is responsive to the type of signal modulation used by communication system comprising Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM), M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM).

    The communications system according to Claim 2, wherein the adaptive 10 gain circuit is operative for slowing down the adaptation rate when the demodulator is at the data demodulation state thereby minimizing any overmodulation or distortion of the received signal.

    An adaptive filter, comprising:a signal input that receives a sampled input signal having communications data 15 encoded therein;a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps with weighted coefficients that receive the input signal and delay the input signal by a prescribed amount based on a transfer function;a summer that receives an output from non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps 20 and sums the output to produce a filtered output signal;and an adaptive gain circuit for updating the adaptive gain of the adaptive filter responsive to a receive state of a modem and/or type of data modulation used by communications system in an effort to reduce undesired narrowband interference;and a tap order selection circuit configured to select the number and order of 25 adaptive filter taps based on one of at least measured output power from the adaptive filter and signal modulation.

    The adaptive filter according to Claim 5, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to the type of signal modulation used by communication system comprising Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM), M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and M-ary Quadrature Amplitude 5 Modulation (M-QAM).

    A method of communicating, comprising:receiving a modulated signal that carries encoded communications data;filtering the signal within an adaptive filter receiving, at an input, a sampled input signal carrying the encoded communications data, and having a finite or infinite 10 impulse response and having a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps and weighted coefficients while updating gain of the adaptive filter taps , wherein a larger gain corresponds to a faster adaptation rate and a smaller gain corresponds to a slower adaptation rate, and wherein the update gain is changed based upon the state of a demodulation process and/or data modulation type of communication system;and 15 demodulating and decoding the signal after filtering to obtain the communications data with reduced multipath interference;measuring the power of the input signal, and feeding the measured power to a automatic tap order selection unit;obtaining sample values from a received signal input by an input normalizing 20 circuit;performing summation of the output of the plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps by a summer;measuring the output power of the summer by a power measurement circuit, and feeding the measured power to the automatic tap order selection unit;25 obtaining sample values from the output of the adaptive filter an output normalizing circuit adapted to obtain sample values from the output by the adaptive filter;delaying the received signal by a variable delay circuit;selecting filter taps by an automatic tap order selection unit;and -30- 01868934X35-01 194601/1 switching the input either directly to a receiving modem or through the adaptive filter depending on the power measurements of the power measurement circuits.

    The method according to Claim 8 which further comprises updating the 5 adaptive taps responsive to whether the demodulating process is in a preamble search, preamble demodulation or data demodulation state.

    The method according to Claim 8, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to the type of signal modulation used by communication system comprising Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM), M- 10 ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM).
