Data demodulation using adaptive filtering techniques

Abstract

A communications system receives a modulated signal that carries encoded communications data. An adaptive filter has a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps with weighted coefficients and an adaptive gain circuit for updating the adaptive gain of the adaptive filter responsive to a received state of a modem or the type of modulation used by communications system. A demodulator and decoder receive the filtered output signal from the adaptive filter and demodulate and decode the signal to obtain the communications data.

10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A communications system for receiving a modulated signal that carries encoded communications data, comprising:an adaptive filter having a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps with weighted coefficients and an adaptive gain circuit for updating the adaptive gain of the adaptive filter responsive to a receive state of a modem and/or type of data modulation used by communication system in an effort to reduce undesired narrowband interference;a demodulator for demodulating the received signal;and a decoder that receives the filtered output signal from the adaptive filter and decodes the signal to obtain the communications data.
  2. 2
The communications system according to Claim 1, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to whether a modem is in a search, preamble or data receive state.
  3. 3
The communications system according to Claim 1, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to the type of signal modulation used by communication system comprising Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM), M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM).
  4. 4
The communications system according to Claim 1, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is operative for slowing down the adaptation rate when a modem initially detects a waveform to minimize any overmodulation or distortion.
  5. 5
An adaptive filter, comprising:a signal input that receives a sampled input signal having communications data encoded therein;a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps with weighted coefficients that receive the input signal and delay the input signal by a prescribed amount based on a transfer function;a summer that receives an output from non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps and sums the output to produce a filtered output signal;and an adaptive gain circuit for updating the adaptive gain of the adaptive filter responsive to a receive state of a modem and/or type of data modulation used by communication system in an effort to reduce undesired narrowband interference.
  6. 6
The adaptive filter according to Claim 5, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to whether a modem is in a search, preamble or data receive state.
  7. 7
The adaptive filter according to Claim 5, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to the type of signal modulation used by communication system comprising Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM), M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM).
  8. 8
A method of communicating, comprising:receiving a modulated signal that carries encoded communications data;filtering the signal within an adaptive filter having a plurality of non-adaptive and adaptive filter taps with weighted coefficients while updating the adaptive taps of the adaptive filter responsive to a receive state of a modem or data modulation type of communication system;and demodulating and decoding the signal after filtering to obtain the communications data with reduced narrowband interference.
  9. 9
The method according to Claim 8, which further comprises updating the adaptive taps responsive to whether a modem is in a search, preamble or data receive state.
  10. 10
The method according to Claim 8, wherein the adaptive gain circuit is responsive to the type of signal modulation used by communication system comprising Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK), Continuous Phase Modulation (CPM), M-ary Phase Shift Keying (M-PSK), and M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM).
