  1. 1
What Is Claimed:1. A process for the preparation of a 5-subStifuted oxazole or 5-substituted imidazole, characterized in that p-tolylsuifonylmethylisocyanide synthesized from N-(p-tolylsulfonylmethyl) formamide with phosphorus oxychloride, phosgene or diphosgene 7 , and a tertiary amine, which is not isolated and purified as crystals, is reacted with an aldehyde or a compound represented by Formula [I]: R'CH=NR 2 (wherein, R 1 and R 2 are optionally substituted phenyl, optionally substituted heterocyclic group or optionally substituted alkyl).
  2. 2
A process according to Claim 1 in which a p-tolylsulfonylmethylisocyanide solution is reacted with an aldehyde or a compound of Formula [I] in a mixed solvent of an aprotic solvent and a protic solvent in the presence of a base.
  3. 3
A process according to Claim 1 or 2 in which the protic solvent is one or more solvents selected from the group consisting of water, C, to C lu alcohols and mono- or poly-alkylene glycols.
  4. 4
A process according to one of Claims 1 to 3 in which the aldehyde or the compound of Formula [1] is reacted with p-tolylsulfonylmethylisocyanide in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst and an inorganic base.
  5. 5
A process according to Claim 1 in which the aldehyde or the compound of Formula [I] is reacted with p-tolylsulfonylmethylisocyanide in the presence of an organic base.
  6. 6
A process according to Claim 5 in which an organic base with pKa of 12 or more is used.
  7. 7
A process according to Claim 5 or 6 in which the organic base is l,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7ene or 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine.
  8. 8
A process according to one of Claims 1 to 7 in which the aldehyde is an unsubstituted or substituted aromatic aldehyde.
