25 139,673/2 10 15 CLAIMS We claim:1. A method for coordinating times at which a mobile station monitors alternative frequencies with times at which an origination base station transmits short messages, comprising the steps of: a) determining at an origination base station when a mobile station will be tuned to receive frequencies other than an origination frequency;b) tuning, by the mobile station, from the origination frequency to a frequency other than the origination frequency;c) collecting and storing data samples;d) retuning to the origination frequency;and e) transmitting short messages only at times when the mobile station is known to be tuned to receive the origination frequency based on the knowledge of when the mobile station will be tuned to frequencies other than the origination frequency.

A method for coordinating times at which a mobile station monitors alternative 5 frequencies with times at which an origination base station transmits short messages, comprising the steps of:a) receiving commands from the origination base station indicating when the mobile station can be tuned to receive frequencies other than an origination frequency;b) tuning, by the mobile station, from the origination frequency to a frequency 10 other than the origination frequency;c) collecting and storing data samples;d) retuning to the origination frequency;and e) determining time periods during which the mobile station will be tuned to frequencies other than the origination frequency based upon the commands received 15 from the origination base station. 20 25

In a wireless communication system, a method for minimizing loss of data in a communication link between a mobile station and a base station while searching for a suitable system with which a mobile assisted hard handoff will later be executed comprising:communicating with an origination base station on a first frequency;tuning to a second frequency from the first frequency;storing data samples received on the second frequency;retuning to the first frequency;and searching the stored data samples for pilot signal offsets.
  4. 13
A base station apparatus for minimizing loss of data in a communication link 20 between a mobile station and a base station while searching for a suitable system with which a mobile assisted hard handoff will later be executed comprising:a forward link power control mechanism for determining a forward link power control index;a boost mode multiplier for increasing a relative output power level at which 25 data is transferred during a portion of a current data frame to produce a boost mode data frame having a power level determined by the forward link power control index;a data rate multiplier for increasing a data rate during a portion of a current data frame to produce a boost mode data frame having an increased data rate determined by a data rate multiplier;30 a block interleaver for error correction coding of boost mode data frames;a convolutional encoder for error correction coding of boost mode data frames;a symbol repeater for creating symbol repetition in less than full rate boost mode data frames;and 28 139,673/2 a multiplexer for controlling puncture of power control commands into boost 5 mode data frames on a forward link channel.
  5. 15
A method of boosting, at a base station, an output power level of a portion of a pair of data frames to ensure that an error correction code will be capable of determining information that is transmitted over a first frequency during the time a mobile station receiver is tuned to a second frequency comprising:15 sending, from a base station to a mobile station, a message identifying an elected frame pair comprising a first frame and second frame;increasing a forward link power control index;transmitting a portion of the first frame of the identified elected frame pair at a power level determined by the increased forward link power control index;20 interrupting forward link transmission during a second portion of the first frame of the elected frame pair and a first portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair;transmitting a second portion of the second frame of the elected frame pair at a power level determined by the increased forward link power control index;and 25 resetting the forward link power control index.
