A method for monitoring the concentration of an analyte by enhancing the permeability of a selected area of the biological tissue to the analyte, comprising steps of: (a) porating the biological tissue at said selected area to form at least one micropore 1-1000 pm in diameter in said biological tissue comprising the step of ablating the biological tissue by placing a heat conducting element in substantial physical contact with the selected area to deliver sufficient energy by conduction to said selected area of said biological tissue such that the temperature of tissue-bound water and other vaporizable substances in said selected area is elevated above the vaporization point of said water and other vaporizable substances thereby removing the biological tissue in said selected area;(b) collecting a selected amount of the analyte through said micropore;and (c) quantitating the analyte collected.

    37. A method for forming micropores in a selected area of biological tissue for enhancin the permeability thereof, comprising the step of ablating the biological tissue by placing heat conducting element in substantial physical contact with the selected area of the biological tissue to deliver sufficient energy by conduction to said selected area of said biological tissue such that the temperature of tissue-bound water and other vaporizable substances in said selected area is elevated above the vaporization point of said water and other vaporizable substances thereby removing the biological tissue and forming at least one micropore 1-1000 pm in diameter in said selected area of said biological tissue.
  3. 69
    70. An apparatus for forming micropores in a selected area of the biological tissue for enhancing the permeability thereof, the apparatus comprising a heat conducting element to be placed in substantial physical contact with the selected area to deliver sufficient energy by conduction to said selected area such that the temperature of tissue-bound water and other vaporizable substances in said selected area is elevated above the vaporization point of said water and other vaporizable substances thereby removing the biological tissue and forming at least one micropore 1-1000 gm across in said selected area of said biological tissue. 64 123,379/2
