Inspection robot

Abstract

A system includes an inspection robot having mounted sleds, and a number of sensors each mounted to a sled. A couplant chamber is disposed within at least two of the sleds, each couplant chamber between a transducer of the sensor and an inspection surface. Each couplant chamber includes a cone, the cone having a cone tip portion at an inspection surface end, and a senor mounting end opposite the cone tip portion. A couplant entry for each couplant chamber is at a vertically upper side of the cone in the intended orientation of the inspection robot on the inspection surface.

11 claims: 9 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A system (100), comprising:an inspection robot comprising a main body (102) and at least one payload (2);a plurality of arms (20), wherein each of the plurality of arms (20) is pivotally mounted (18) to the at least one payload (2) to rotate around respective ones of a plurality of axes while the inspection robot traverses an inspection surface in a direction of travel, and wherein at least one of the plurality of axes is in the direction of travel;a plurality of sleds (1) mounted to the plurality of arms (20);a plurality of inspection sensors (2202) coupled to the plurality of sleds (1) such that each sensor is operationally couplable to the inspection surface;and wherein the plurality of sleds (1) are distributed horizontally at adjustable positions spaced apart from each other across the at least one payload (2) to inspect the inspection surface at a selected horizontal resolution.
  2. 3
The system of any of claims 1 to 2, wherein the at least one payload includes a plurality of payloads, and each payload is at a distinct horizontal inspection lane of the inspection surface.
  3. 4
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the plurality of inspection sensors (2022) comprises a plurality of ultra-sonic (UT) sensors, the system further comprising a couplant chamber (2810) mounted to each of the plurality of sleds (1), wherein the couplant chamber (2810) defines a delay line between the corresponding UT sensor and the inspection surface, and wherein the couplant chamber (2810) comprises a cone (2804), the cone comprising a cone tip portion (2820) at an inspection surface end of the cone (2804), and a sensor mounting end (2808) opposite the cone tip portion (2820), and wherein the cone tip portion defines a couplant exit opening.
  4. 6
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the system further includes a biasing member (21) providing a down force on each of the arms.
  5. 7
The system of any preceding claim, wherein:the inspection robot further comprises a plurality of magnetic wheels (3) configured to traverse a ferrous inspection surface.
  6. 8
The system of any preceding claim wherein the plurality of inspection sensors (2202) comprises a plurality of ultra-sonic (UT) sensors, the system further comprising a couplant chamber (2810) mounted to one of the plurality of sleds (1), wherein the couplant chamber (2810) defines a delay line between the corresponding UT sensor and the inspection surface, and wherein the couplant chamber comprises a cone (2804), the cone comprising a cone tip portion (2820) at an inspection surface end of the cone (2804), and a sensor mounting end (2808) opposite the cone tip portion (2820), and wherein the cone tip portion (2820) defines a couplant exit opening;a couplant entry (2814) for the couplant chamber (2810), wherein the couplant entry is positioned between the cone tip portion (2820) and the sensor mounting end;and wherein the couplant entry is positioned at a vertically upper side of the cone (2804) in an intended orientation of the inspection robot on the inspection surface.
  7. 9
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the at least one payload (2) is horizontally moveable relative to the main body (102) of the inspection robot.
  8. 10
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the plurality of sleds are respectively connected to the plurality of arms with a pivot connection (17) that provides a pivotal degree of freedom.
  9. 11
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the plurality of arms are linearly spaced apart at the adjustable positions in a direction orthogonal to the direction of travel.
