Passive dynamic geofencing for mobile devices

Abstract

Systems and methods for passive dynamic geofencing on a mobile device are discussed. For example, a method for passive dynamic geofencing can include operations such as monitoring a first parent geofence and a first plurality of child geofences; detecting crossing a boundary of the first parent geofence into a second parent geofence; loading the second parent geofence and a second plurality of child geofences encompassed by the second parent geofence; and monitoring the second parent geofence and the second plurality of child geofences.

14 claims: 6 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A method comprising:monitoring (710), on a mobile device (115), a first parent geofence and a first plurality of child geofences, the first plurality of child geofences being partially within a geographic boundary of the first parent geofence or within a predefined distance of the geographic boundary of the first parent geofence;detecting (720), on the mobile device (115), a boundary crossing of the first parent geofence into a second parent geofence;loading (730), based at least in part on detection of the boundary crossing, the second plurality of child geofences being partially within a geographic boundary of the second parent geofence or within a predefined distance of the geographic boundary of the second parent geofence;and monitoring (740), on the mobile device (115), the second parent geofence and the second plurality of child geofences.
  2. 7
A mobile device (115) comprising:a memory (320) for storing parent geofence and a plurality of child geofences;and a processor (310) programmed to carry out the method of any one of claims 1 to 6.
  3. 8
A carrier medium carrying machine readable code for execution by a processor of a mobile device to carry out the method of any one of claims 1 to 6.
  4. 9
A method comprising:receiving (810), over a network (105) from a mobile device (115), a first geofence page request including a current location associated with the mobile device (115);generating (820), based at least in part on the current location associated with the mobile device (115), a first parent geofence and a first plurality of child geofences in response to the first geofence page request, wherein the first plurality of child geofences are partially within a geographic boundary of the first parent geofence or within a predefined distance of the geographic boundary of the first parent geofence;transmitting (830), over the network (105) to the mobile device (115), the first parent geofence and the first plurality of child geofences;receiving (840), over the network (105) from the mobile device (115), a second geofence page request, the second geofence page request including an updated current location associated with the mobile device (115);generating (850), based at least in part on the updated current location associated with the mobile device (115), a second parent geofence and a second plurality of child geofences, wherein the second plurality of child geofences are partially within a geographic boundary of the second parent geofence or within a predefined distance of the geographic boundary of the second parent geofence;and transmitting (860), over the network (105) to the mobile device (115), the second parent geofence and the second plurality of child geofences.
  5. 13
A geofence paging system comprising:a memory for storing parent geofence and a plurality of child geofences;and a processor programmed to carry out the method of any one of claims 9 to 12.
  6. 14
A machine-readable medium carrying instructions that, when executed by a processor of a geofence paging system, cause the geofence paging system to carry out the method of any one of claims 9 to 12.
