  1. 1
A system for ablating a region of a tissue, the system comprising:a laser (50) emitting a beam of laser pulses, at least one optical fiber (55) comprising an input facet and an output facet;wherein the at least one optical fiber is configured to be coupled to the laser through coupling optics;such that a flux of energy is emitted from said at least one optical fiber;a beam splitter (53) positioned between said laser and said at least one fiber;and a linear polarizer (51) disposed in the optical path of the beam, such that the beam has a predetermined linear polarization before impinging on the beam splitter;a quarter wave plate (54) disposed between the beam splitter and the input facet of the at least one fiber, such that the beam splitter directs the predetermined fraction towards the detector;and a detector (58) positioned behind said beam splitter in a position normal to the direction of the beam emitted by the laser;wherein said detector receives a predetermined fraction of said beam, wherein said fraction is back-transmitted from said input facet and/or said output facet, such that the flux of energy delivered by said at least one optical fiber can be determined.
  2. 8
The laser ablation system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the laser is a highly multimode laser, the system further comprising a half wave plate and wherein the beam splitter is a polarization beam splitter to split the beam into two component parts, an S-polarized and a P-polarized part.
  3. 11
The laser ablation system according to any of the claims 8-10, further comprising two full reflector mirrors, and a second polarization beam splitter, and a coupling lens.
