System for tissue ablation using pulsed laser

Abstract

Systems for enabling delivery of very high peak power laser pulses through optical fibers for use in ablation procedures preferably in contact mode. Such lasers advantageously emit at 355nm wavelength. Other systems enable selective removal of undesired tissue within a blood vessel, while minimizing the risk of damaging the blood vessel itself, based on the use of the ablative properties of short laser pulses of 320 to 400nm laser wavelength, with selected parameters of the mechanical walls of the tubes constituting the catheter, of the laser fluence and of the force that is applied by the catheter on the tissues. Additionally, a novel method of calibrating such catheters is disclosed, which also enables real time monitoring of the ablation process. Additionally, novel methods of protecting the fibers exit facets are disclosed.

  1. 1
A system for ablating a region of a tissue, the system comprising:a laser emitting a beam of laser pulses, at least one optical fiber comprising an input facet and an output facet;wherein the at least one optical fiber is configured to be coupled to the laser through coupling optics;such that a flux of energy is emitted from said at least one optical fiber;a beam splitter positioned between said laser and said at least one fiber;and a detector positioned behind said beam splitter in a position normal to the direction of the beam emitted by the laser;wherein said detector receives a predetermined fraction of said beam back-transmitted from said input facet and/or said output facet, such that the flux of energy delivered by said at least one optical fiber can be determined.
  2. 4
The laser ablation system of claim 4, wherein the cap is coated with a reflective coating configured to back transmit the laser beam emitted by the laser.
  3. 6
The laser ablation system of claim 6, further comprising an optical or spatial filter configured to separate the beam back-transmitted from the cap from the beam back-transmitted from the input facet.
  4. 8
A device used for ablating a region of a tissue, the device comprising:a pulsed laser;at least one optical fiber coupled to said laser;the optical fiber configured to transmit the laser beam emitted by the laser coupling optics configured to direct the beam emitted by the laser to the optical fiber wherein the M-squared of said pulse laser beam emitted by the laser is greater than 30, wherein the M-squared is defined as: M 2 = Dθπ 4 λ where D = diameter of said pulse laser beam, λ = wavelength of said pulsed laser beam, and θ = full angle beam divergence of said pulse laser in radians.
  5. 13
A laser catheter for ablating undesired tissue, the laser catheter comprising:an inner tube and an outer tuber, wherein each of said inner tube and outer tube has a proximal end and a distal end, at least one optical fiber disposed between said inner and said outer tube, wherein said at least one optical fiber is coupled to a laser source, and wherein said catheter comprises a durability element configured to enhance the durability of said at least one optical fiber
