A flywheel energy storage device comprising:a sealed housing (14, 16, 18) comprising a top plate (14), a bottom plate (18), and a cylindrical vertical enclosure (16);a rotor (12) disposed within the sealed housing (14, 16, 18);an upper bearing pack (20) having a bearing pack outer housing (46) arranged on the top plate (14), comprising one or more rolling contact bearings (42) disposed between the rotor (12) and the top plate (14), and a lower bearing pack (20) having a bearing pack outer housing (46) arranged on the bottom plate (18), comprising one or more rolling contact bearings (42) disposed between the rotor (12) and the bottom plate (18);an off-loading magnet (28) configured to provide a vertical off-loading force that lifts the rotor (12) against the rolling contact bearings (42) of the upper bearing pack (20) in a vertical direction and off of the rolling contact bearings (42) of the lower bearing pack (20) in a vertical direction;and characterised in that it comprises a strain gauge (62) configured to monitor strain on the rotor (12) in real-time, wherein the strain gauge (62) is bonded to a surface of the rotor (12) inside the cylindrical vertical enclosure (16) and oriented along a direction parallel and tangential to the radial vector, and wherein the strain gauge comprises a wireless transmitter (62) to wirelessly transmit strain measurements to a receiver inside the cylindrical vertical enclosure (16).
