56 claims: 3 independent, 53 dependent

  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 2015006136 A2 What is claimed is:1. A flywheel device comprising: a sealed housing section;a rotor disposed within the housing section;a bearing housing comprising one or more of lower contact bearings and upper contact bearings disposed between the rotor and a plate;and an off-loading magnet configured to provide a vertical off-loading force that lifts the rotor against the upper bearings and off of the lower bearings.
  2. 45
A method comprising :cutting a cast ingot;upsetting the cast ingot in an open die at a first temperature;hot forging the cast ingot into a disc-shaped blank including bosses on opposing surfaces of the disc-shaped blank;heat treating the disc-shaped blank;and cooling the disc-shaped blank to form a disc-shaped rotor.
  3. 53
A method of pre-conditioning a flywheel rotor, the method comprising:spinning a rotor at a rotational speed that causes a strain on the rotor to exceed a yield strength of a material of the rotor;and responsive to reaching a predefined amount of yielding, slowing the rotor back to a stationary position, wherein the spinning and slowing of the rotor causes an increase in the yield strength of the material of the rotor;and respinning the rotor to the rotational speed, wherein the respinning the rotor to the rotational speed causes a strain on the rotor that does not exceed an increased yield strength of the material of the rotor resulting from the increase in the yield strength of the material of the rotor.
