  1. 1
A device (74) for forming the ends of a pipe element, the device (74) comprising a first roller (78) and second roller (80) for imparting a shape to a sidewall of a pipe element, wherein said first roller (78) rotates about an axis (82) and comprises:• a first segment (94) having a first outer diameter (94a);• a second segment (96) positioned contiguous with said first segment (94) and having a second outer diameter (96a) smaller than said first outer diameter (94a);• a third segment (98) positioned contiguous with said second segment (96) and having a third outer diameter (98a) larger than said second outer diameter (96a);and wherein said second roller (80) rotates about an axis (88) and comprises: • a fourth segment (104) having a fourth outer diameter (104a);• a fifth segment (106) positioned contiguous with said fourth segment (104), having a fifth outer diameter (106a) greater than said fourth outer diameter (104a);• a sixth segment (108) positioned contiguous with said fifth segment (106) and having an sixth outer diameter (108a) less than said fifth outer diameter (106a);• a seventh segment (110) positioned contiguous with said sixth segment (108) and having a seventh outer diameter (110a) approximately equal to said fifth outer diameter (106a);wherein said fifth segment (106) further comprises a first annular surface (114) positioned adjacent to said fourth segment (104) and a second annular surface (116) positioned adjacent to said sixth segment (108) and oriented angularly with respect to said second axis (88);characterized in that said first roller (78) further comprises: • an eighth segment (100) positioned contiguous with said third segment (98) and having an eighth outer diameter (100a) smaller than said second outer diameter (96a);and • a ninth segment (110) positioned contiguous with said eighth segment (100) and having an ninth outer diameter (110a) approximately equal to said second outer diameter (96a);said device (74) further comprises: • a support frame (76);• said first roller (78) being mounted on said support frame (76) and being rotatable about a first axis (82), said first roller (78) being adapted to engage an inner surface of said pipe element;• means (90) for rotating said first roller (78) about said first axis (82);• said second roller (80) being mounted on said support frame (76) and being rotatable about a second axis (88) oriented substantially parallel to said first axis (82), said second roller (80) being movable toward and away from said first roller (78) and being adapted to engage an outer surface of said pipe element;• means (90) for moving said second roller (80) relatively to said first roller (78) for compressing said sidewall there between while said rollers rotate, said rollers being arranged relatively to one another on said support frame (76) such that: • said fourth segment (104) is aligned with said first segment (94);• said fifth segment (106) is aligned with said second segment (96);• said sixth segment (108) is aligned with said third segment (98);and • said seventh segment (110) is aligned with said eighth segment (100) and at least a portion of said ninth segment (102).
  2. 8
A method of imparting a shape to said sidewall of a pipe element having an inner surface and an outer surface by using the device according to Claims 1 to 8, said device (74) comprising first and second rollers (78,80), said method comprising:• contacting said inner surface at a first point on the first segment (94) of said first roller (78);• contacting said outer surface at a third point on the fifth segment (106) of said second roller (80);• rotating one of said first and second rollers (78,80) thereby causing the other of said first and second rollers (78,80) and said pipe element to rotate, said first roller (78) circumferentially traversing said inner surface, said second roller (80) circumferentially traversing said outer surface;• moving one of said first and second rollers (78,80) toward the other of said first and second rollers (78,80) and deforming said sidewall of said pipe element through contact between said inner surface and the first and third segments (94,98) of said first roller (78) and contact between said outer surface and the fifth and seventh segments (106,110) of said second roller (80);• continue moving one of said first and second rollers (78,80) toward the other of said first and second rollers (78,80) and compressing said sidewall of said pipe element between said first segment (94) of said first roller (78) and the fourth segment (104) of said second roller (80);• continue moving one of said first and second rollers toward the other of said first and second rollers and compressing said sidewall of said pipe element between the second segment (96) of said first roller and said fifth segment (106) of said second roller (80);• continue moving one of said first and second rollers toward the other of said first and second rollers (78,80) and compressing said sidewall of said pipe element between the third segment (98) of said first roller (78) and said fifth and seventh segments (106,110) of said second roller (80).
