Measuring video-program viewing

Abstract

A computer-implemented method of using video program viewing activity data as input to an aggregation engine built on the Hadoop MapReduce framework which calculates second-by-second video viewing activity for Linear, DVR, and VOD program level viewing including measuring trick play activity with results aggregated to the analyst's choice of program, program airing, channel, house attributes, device attributes, geographic area, demographic attributes, viewing date, or any combination of these fields, for each second of program content represented in the video program viewing data. The source data may be extracted from a database defined according to the Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. Media Measurement Data Model defined in "Audience Data Measurement Specification" as "OpenCable™ Specifications, Audience Measurement, Audience Measurement Data Specification" document OC-SP-AMD-I01-130502 or any similar format. These metrics provide detailed data needed to calculate information on customer viewing behavior that can drive business decisions for service providers, advertisers, and content producers.

15 claims: 10 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method, comprising:receiving, by a computing system, video-viewing-activity data comprising a plurality of entries;for each entry of the plurality of entries: determining, by the computing system, a video-viewing type via which a video-asset-viewing device displayed a video asset;generating, by the computing system, one or more records for the entry, the one or more records corresponding to a segment comprising video content spanning from a positon of the video asset at which the video-asset-viewing device began displaying the video asset to a position of the video asset at which the video-asset-viewing device stopped displaying the video asset, each record of the one or more records corresponding to an interval of the video content and indicating the video-viewing type;and aggregating, by the computing system, the one or more records into a record set comprising a plurality of records corresponding to the segment;and determining, by the computing system and based on a portion of the plurality of records, a video-viewing-activity metric for the segment.
  2. 3
The method of any of the previous claims, further comprising identifying, by the computing system, each record of the portion based on the record indicating a video-viewing type corresponding to the video-viewing-activity metric.
  3. 4
The method of any of the previous claims, wherein determining the video-viewing-activity metric comprises determining a number of records in the portion.
  4. 5
The method of any of the previous claims, wherein determining the video-viewing-activity metric comprises determining a number of records in the plurality.
  5. 6
The method of any of the previous claims, further comprising identifying, by the computing system, a subset of the portion corresponding to criteria of the video-viewing-activity metric.
  6. 8
The method of any of the previous claims, as far as dependent on claim 6, wherein the criteria comprises a threshold percentage of display area, and wherein identifying the subset comprises, for each record in the subset, determining that the record indicates that the video-asset-viewing device displayed the video content over the threshold percentage of display area for the interval.
  7. 9
The method of any of the previous claims, as far as dependent on claim 6, wherein the criteria comprises a threshold audio level, and wherein identifying the subset comprises, for each record in the subset, determining that the record indicates that the video-asset-viewing device produced audio associated with the video content at an audio level over the threshold audio level for the interval.
  8. 10
The method of any of the previous claims, as far as dependent on claim 6, wherein determining the video-viewing-activity metric comprises determining a number of records in the subset.
  9. 11
The method of any of the previous claims, wherein, each record of the one or more records comprises a value indicating a portion of the interval that the video-asset-viewing device displayed the video asset.
  10. 15
The method of any of the previous claims, wherein the interval is less than a minute.
