Micro-optic security and image presentation system

Abstract

Film material comprising micro-images and a regular two dimensional array of non-cylindrical lenses, the film material utilizing the regular two dimensional array of non-cylindrical lenses to enlarge micro-images, and to form a synthetically magnified image through the united performance of a multiplicity of individual lens/icon image systems, the film material being combined with a patterned coating and/or a patterned metalized layer.

  1. 1
  2. 4
Film material as of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the total thickness of the film material is less than 50 microns and/or wherein the lenses have a diameter of less than 50 microns.
  3. 5
Film material as of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the micro-images are formed from voids or solid regions in a microstructure and/or wherein voids in the microstructure are filled or coated with another material such as evaporated metal material or dyed or pigmented material.
  4. 6
Film material as of any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the synthetically magnified image is colorless or colored and/or wherein the background around the synthetically magnified image is transparent, translucent, pigmented, metalized, fluorescent, phosphorescent, displays optically variable color, or is substantially retroreflective.
  5. 7
Film material as of any of claims 1 to 6, wherein an optical spacer is provided between the lenses and the micro-images, wherein the optical spacer may be contiguous with the lens material or may be a separate substrate and/or wherein the micro-images are protected by a sealing layer, which optionally is made of a polymer material, wherein optionally the sealing layer is transparent, translucent, tinted, pigmented, opaque, metallic, magnetic, optically variable or any combination of these, which provide optical effects and/or additional functionality for security and authentication purposes, including support of automated currency authentication, verification, tracking, counting, and detection systems, that rely on optical effects, electrical conductivity or electrical capacitance or magnetic field detection.
  6. 8
Film material as of any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the film material is applied over printed information such that both the printed information and the images are seen at the same time in spatial or dynamic motion relationship to each other and/or wherein the lenses have a focal length of less than about 40 microns, such as about 10 to less than about 30 microns and/or wherein the synthetically magnified image and the background surrounding it is colorless or colored and either or both the images and the background surrounding them can be transparent, translucent, pigmented, fluorescent, phosphorescent, display optically variable color, metalized or substantially retro reflective and/or wherein the material is overprinted, such as having a print applied to the uppermost surface of the material, such as the uppermost lens surface and/or wherein the lenses have an F# of less than 4, such as 2 or lower and/or wherein the lenses and the micro-images are formed of acrylic, acrylated polyester, acrylated urethane, polypropylene, epoxy, urethane, or polyester and/or wherein the film material is laminated to paper or is provided as a thread or patch.
  7. 9
Film material as in any of claims 1 to 8, wherein micro-images are formed from dyes embedded in a supporting material for example formed by dye sublimation transfer into a dye receptor coating;and/or wherein micro-images have grayscale or tonal patterns giving grayscale or tonal synthetically magnified images, wherein a transparent micro structured micro-image layer is provided and the micro-images are formed as bas-relief surfaces that are filled with a pigmented or dyed material, wherein the bas-relief micro structures of micro-images provide thickness variations in the dyed or pigmented fill material that create variations in the optical density of the micro-images, wherein the underside of the micro-image layer optionally may be sealed by a sealing layer that can be transparent, tinted, colored, dyed, pigmented or opaque, or a transparent bas-relief micro structured micro-image layer is provided which includes micro-images that are coated with a high refractive index material, wherein the transparent bas-relief micro structured micro-image layer can optionally be sealed with a sealing layer that fills the micro-images, or a transparent bas-relief micro structured micro-image layer is provided which utilizes an air, gas or liquid volume, wherein an optional sealing layer is provided with or without optional adhesive to entrap the air, gas or liquid volume;and/or wherein shadow images of the micro-images are provided when the security thread is illuminated by a strongly directional light source such as for example by a point light source such as a spotlight or an LED flashlight, or by a collimated source such as sun light, wherein the shadow images of the micro-images move as the direction of illumination moves, the shadow images lie in the plane of the security thread and the color of the shadow images is the color of the micro-images.
  8. 10
Substrate, having applied to it or incorporated into it a film material as of any of claims 1 to 9, in combination with printed information.
  9. 12
Substrate as of any of claims 10 or 11, wherein the film material is at least partially transparent and adhered to a fibrous or non-fibrous substrate with an adhesive element and/or wherein a print element is applied directly to the upper lens surface of the film material, wherein the print element may be part of a larger pattern that extends beyond the film material and/or wherein the film material is laminated over a print element that was applied to the fibrous or non-fibrous substrate prior to the application of the film material.
  10. 13
