    A micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) comprising:an in-plane image (4019) having a boundary (4013) and an image area (2005,2052,2057) within the boundary (4013) that visually lies substantially in the plane of a substrate on which the in-plane image (4019) is carried;one or more control patterns of icons (2050,2055) contained within the boundary (4013) of the in-plane image (4019) and being absent outside of the boundary (4013);and an array of icon focusing elements positioned to form at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010,2315) of at least a portion of the one or more control patterns of icons (2050,2055), the at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010) providing a limited field of view for viewing of the in-plane image (4019) operating to modulate the appearance of the in-plane image (4019);wherein the one or more control patterns of icons (2050, 2055) are in the focal plane of the icon focusing elements;wherein the apparent size of a visual projection of the at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010) is larger than the image area of the in-plane image (4019);wherein the magnification of the synthetically magnified image is determined by angular misalignment of the control patterns of icons with respect to the array of icon focusing elements, wherein the focusing elements are non-cylindrical focusing elements, preferably aspheric focusing elements.

    The micro-optic system (2070,2250,2285) of any claims 1-7, wherein the one or more control patterns of icons (2050,2055) includes a composite set (2065) of a plurality of icon arrays for producing visually different images.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any claims 1-7, wherein at least one of the control patterns of icons (2050, 2055) includes a background for the at least one control pattern of icons (2050,2055), the background including a tint.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any claims 1-7, wherein the one or more control patterns of icons (2050,2055) includes at least two arrays of icons having different repeat periods within the icon arrays for forming at least two visually differing synthetically magnified images.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any claims 1-7, wherein the array of icon focusing elements includes focusing elements having an effective diameter of less than 50 microns, or the system has a thickness of less than 50 microns, or both.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the array of icon focusing elements includes focusing elements having an effective diameter of between 10 microns and 30 microns.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the array of focusing elements includes focusing elements having an F number equivalent to 4 or less, preferably an F number equivalent to 2 or less.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, each focusing element having an effective diameter of less than 30 microns.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, the system having a total thickness of less than about 45 microns.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, the system having a total thickness of about 10 to about 40 microns, or including focusing elements having a focal length of less than about 40 microns, or both.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the icons are formed as recesses in a substrate, the recesses forming voids that optionally may be filled with a material having a different refractive index than the substrate, a dyed material, a metal, a magnetic material, a pigmented material such as a pigmented resin, or combinations thereof.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, the system including a transparent tamper indicating material placed over the focusing elements.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, the system further including one or more optical spacers positioned between the one or more control patterns of icons and the array of image icon focusing elements.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the icons are formed from one or more patterns of colorless, transparent, opaque, ink, colored, tinted or dyed material, or formed as protrusions in the surface of a substrate, the spaces between the protrusions optionally being filled with a material having one or more of a different index of refraction than the substrate, a dyed material, a metal, a pigmented material, or the icons are either positive or negative icons in relation to a background on which they appear.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010) appears to lie on a spatial plane deeper than the system or appears to lie on a spatial plane above the system, or appears to move between a spatial plane deeper than the system and a spatial plane above the system upon rotation of the system about an axis that intersects a plane of the system.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein when the system is tilted about an axis substantially parallel to a plane of the system the at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010) appears to move in a direction parallel to the tilt axis.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010) appears to transform from one or more of a form, shape, size or color to another of a form, shape, size or color.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the at least one synthetically magnified image (2007,2010) appears to be three dimensional.

    The micro-optic system (2000,2070,2250,2285) of any of claims 1-7, wherein the focusing elements are aspheric focusing elements, and wherein the icons are formed as recesses in a substrate, the recesses forming voids that optionally may be filled with a material having a different refractive index than the substrate, a dyed material, a metal, a magnetic material a pigmented material, in particular a pigmented resin, or combinations thereof.
