  1. 1
A hearing assistance device (20, 100), comprising:a microphone (110) adapted to receive sound and convert it to an input signal;a receiver (180) adapted to play output sound based on an output signal;a digital signal processor (120-160) adapted to process the input signal and generate the output signal, the digital signal processor being further adapted to run an acoustic feedback tracking algorithm on the hearing assistance device to monitor information relating to acoustic feedback events occurring over an extended period of use of the hearing assistance device, characterised in that the digital signal processor is further adapted to perform multiband or sub-band acoustic feedback cancellation to reduce the acoustic feedback between the receiver and the microphone on a frequency band-by-band basis, and the information includes collection per frequency band of the acoustic feedback events occurring over the extended period of use;wherein the information is accessible for analysis to determine aspects of the acoustic feedback experienced by the hearing assistance device over the extended period of use, the extended period of use including different acoustic environments experienced by a wearer of the hearing assistance device during use of the hearing assistance device;and wherein the hearing assistance device is configurable such that the feedback tracking algorithm is continually run, or is activated during a monitoring period, or is activated upon certain programmable events occurring.
  2. 2
A device according to Claim 1, wherein the digital signal processor (120-160) is adapted to store the monitored information to memory outside of the hearing assistance device.
  3. 3
A device according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the digital signal processor (120-160) is adapted to store the monitored information including one or more of a total number of occurrences of a feedback event, and a number of feedback events per unit time.
  4. 4
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the digital signal processor (120-160) is adapted to store statistical information about acoustic feedback events.
  5. 5
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the microphone (110) and digital signal processor (120-160) are disposed in a housing adapted to be worn on or behind a wearer's ear and the receiver (180) is connected to the housing with wires.
  6. 6
A device according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the microphone (110), digital signal processor (120-160), and receiver (180) are disposed in a housing adapted to fit in a wearer's ear.
  7. 7
A device according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the microphone (110), digital signal processor (120-160), and receiver (180) are disposed in a housing adapted to fit behind a wearer's ear.
  8. 8
A device according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising wireless electronics adapted to perform wireless communication of the monitored information.
  9. 9
A method for monitoring the performance of a hearing assistance device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that it comprises:running the acoustic feedback tracking algorithm continually or activating it during a monitoring period or activating it upon certain programmable events occurring, to track information about a plurality of acoustic feedback events over the extended time interval of use of the hearing assistance device to monitor performance of the acoustic feedback canceller performing acoustic feedback cancellation on a frequency band-by-band basis, in different acoustic environments experienced by the wearer of the hearing assistance device, wherein tracking the information includes the collection per frequency band of the plurality of acoustic feedback events occurring over the extended time interval of use;and storing the information for analysis.
  10. 10
A method according to Claim 9 comprising activating the tracking upon the occurrence of predetermined events.
  11. 11
A method according to Claim 9 or Claim 10, wherein the storing is performed in the hearing assistance device.
  12. 13
A method according to Claim 9, 10 or 12, wherein the storing is performed using the INTERNET.
  13. 14
A method according to any one of Claims 9 to 13, wherein the information includes one or more of:a total number of occurrences of a feedback event, and a number of feedback events per unit time.
