Abstract

There is disclosed herein a tubular handling system characterized by: a first tubular handling assembly (164) configured to handle vertical tubular members; a second tubular handling assembly (166) configured to handle vertical tubular members; and a rail (168), wherein the first tubular handling assembly (164) and second tubular handling assembly (166) are mounted to transverse upon said rail (168). Further embodiments are illustrated and described showing this and further handling assemblies and systems, and applications to drillships, semi-submersibles and the like.

    A method for conducting multi-activity drilling operations from a drilling deck (190) positioned above the surface of the body of water, said method being characterized by the steps of:positioning a blow-out preventer (200) from a first tubular hoisting assembly (152) on a well bore;making-up stands of tubular members from a second tubular hoisting assembly (154) sized to advance tubular members to the seabed (196);and transferring stands of tubular members from said second tubular hoisting assembly (154) to said first tubular hoisting assembly (152).

    The method of any preceding claim, further characterised in that the first tubular hoisting assembly(152) advances the stands of tubular members to and into said well bore.

    The method of any preceding claim, wherein, prior to positioning the blow-out preventer (200) from the first tubular hoisting assembly (152) on said well bore, the second tubular hoisting assembly (154) advances a tubular string to and into the well bore, and the drilling deck is repositioned, relative to the well bore, to enable the blow-out preventer (200) to be positioned from the first tubular hoisting assembly (152) on said well bore.

    A superstructure (40) operable to perform a support function for more than one tubular drilling activity for conducting simultaneous operations through a deck;a drill floor (114) of the superstructure, including first and second tubular advancing stations (160, 162);and a tubular advancing system (182, 183) and a tubular handling system (164, 166, 168) able to independently handle, make-up or break down, and advance tubulars at both the first and second tubular advancing stations, and able to pass tubular segments back and forth between the first tubular advancing station and the second tubular advancing station and setback envelopes (170, 172, 174).

    A multi-activity drilling assembly supported above a body of water (194) for conducting drilling operations, said assembly comprising a drill floor (114), and characterized by :a first tubular advancing station (160) positioned on said drill floor (114) and a second tubular advancing station (162) positioned on said drill floor (114) and spaced from said first tubular advancing station (160);a superstructure (40) positioned to support simultaneous operations at said first tubular advancing station (160) and said second tubular advancing station (162);a first tubular hoisting assembly (140, 144, 152) operably positioned relative to said first tubular advancing station (160) for advancing tubular members to the seabed and a second tubular hoisting assembly (142, 144, 154) operably positioned relative to said second tubular advancing station (162) for advancing tubular members to the seabed;and a tubular handling system (164, 166, 168, 170, 172, 174) positioned to transfer tubular members between said first tubular advancing station (160) and said second tubular advancing station (162).

    A multi-activity drilling assembly in accordance with claim 8 or 9, characterized in that :said tubular handling system comprises a first tubular handling assembly (164) and a second tubular handling assembly (166);and said tubular handling system (164, 166, 168, 170, 172, 174) further comprises a rail (168), wherein said first tubular handling assembly (164) and said second tubular handling assembly (166) are mounted to traverse upon said rail (168).

    A multi-activity drilling assembly in accordance with any one of claims 8 to 10, characterized in that said tubular handling system (164, 166, 168, 170, 172, 174) further comprises:- a first tubular setback envelope (170), wherein said first tubular handling assembly (164) and said second tubular handling assembly (166) are positionable to access said first tubular setback envelope (170);and/or - a second tubular setback envelope (172), wherein said first tubular handling assembly (164) and said second tubular handling assembly (166) are positionable to access said second tubular setback envelope (172).

    A multi-activity drilling assembly comprising:a drill floor (114);a first tubular advancing station (160) positioned on said drill floor (114);characterized by : a second tubular advancing station (162) positioned on said drill floor (114) and spaced from said first tubular advancing station (160);a tubular handling system (164,166,168,170,172,174) operably positioned on said drill floor (114) to transfer tubular members between said first tubular advancing station (160) and said second tubular advancing station (162);a first iron roughneck (180) operably positioned with respect to said first tubular advancing station (160);and a second iron roughneck (181) operably positioned with respect to said second tubular advancing station (162).

    A multi-activity drill area in accordance with claim 12, characterized in that :said tubular handling system (164, 166, 168, 170, 172, 174) comprises a first setback envelope (170) operably positioned with respect to said first tubular advancing station (160) and said second tubular advancing station (162) and a second setback envelope (172) operably positioned with respect to said first tubular advancing station (160) and said second tubular advancing station (162).

    A multi-activity drilling assembly in accordance with claim 12 or 13, characterized in that :said tubular handling system (164, 166, 168, 170, 172, 174) further comprises a rail (168), wherein said first tubular handling assembly (164) and said second tubular handling assembly (166) are mounted to traverse upon said rail (168).

    A multi-activity drilling assembly in accordance with any one of claims 12 to 14, characterized by :a first rotary table (161) positioned at said first tubular advancing station (160) and a second rotary table (163) positioned at said second tubular advancing station (162);a multi-activity superstructure (40) extending above said drill floor (114) and positioned to simultaneously support primary drilling activity into the seabed (196) and auxiliary drilling activity to the seabed (196) through said first and second rotary tables (161, 163);a first top drive assembly (182) moveably engaged to said multi-activity superstructure (40) and positioned above said first rotary table (161);and a second top drive assembly (183) moveably engaged to said multi-activity superstructure (40) and positioned above said second rotary table (163), wherein said first tubular handling assembly (164) is positionable to access said first rotary table (161), said second rotary table (163), said first setback envelope (170), and said second setback envelope (172);and said second tubular handling assembly (166) is positionable to access said first rotary table (161), said second rotary table (163), said first setback envelope (170), and said second setback envelope (172).
