Abstract

A multi-activity drillship (30) method and apparatus having a single derrick (40) and multiple tubular activity stations within the derrick (40) wherein primary drilling activity may be conducted from the derrick (40) and simultaneously auxiliary drilling activity may be conducted from the same derrick (40) to reduce the length of the primary drilling activity critical path.

    CLAIMS 1. A drillship (30) having a bow (36), a stem (38) and an intermediate moon pool (34) between the bow (36) and stem (38) and being fitted to conduct off-shore drilling operations through the moon pool and into the bed (196) of a body of water (194) from a single derrick (40), wherein said drillship being characterized by:a single derrick (40) positioned upon the drillship (30) and extending above the moon pool (34) for simultaneously supporting drilling operations and operations auxiliary to drilling operations through the moon pool (34) for a single well;first means (160) positioned within said derrick (40) for advancing tubular members through the moon pool (34), to the bed (196) of the body of water (194) and into the bed (196) of a body of water;second means (162) positioned within said derrick (40) for advancing tubular members through the moon pool (34), to the bed (196) of the body of water (194) and into the bed of a body of water;means (168) positioned within said derrick (40) for transferring tubular assemblies between said first means for advancing tubular members (160) and said second means for advancing tubular members (162) to facilitate simultaneous drilling operations and operations auxiliary to said drilling operations, said means for transferring comprising first means (164) positioned within said derrick (40), for handling tubular members for said first means (160) for advancing tubular members and second means (166), positioned within said derrick (40), for handling tubular members for said second means (162) for advancing members;a first driller console (156) positioned within said derrick (40) for controlling said first means (160) for advancing tubular members;-36a second driller console (159) positioned within said derrick (40) for controlling said second means (162) for advancing tubular members;said first driller console (156) and said second driller console (158) being positioned within said derrick (40) generally adjacent to a line extending between said first means (160) for advancing tubular members and said second means (! 62) for advancing tubular members with said first driller console (156) being located closer to said first means (160) for advancing tubular members than to said second means (162) for advancing tubular members and said second driller console (158) being located closer to said second means (162) for advancing tubular members than to said first means (160) for advancing tubular members;wherein said drilling operation can be conducted from said derrick (40) by said first (160) or second (162) means for advancing tubular members and said first (164) or second (166) means for handling tubular members and auxiliary drilling operation for a single well can be simultaneously conducted from said derrick by the other of said first (160) or second (162) means for advancing tubular members and the other of said first (164) or second ί 166) means for handling tubular members to shorten the critical timeline for drilling operations for a single well. A multi-activity drilling assembly operable to be supported from a position above tire surface of a body of water (194) for conducting drilling operations to the bed (195 ) of the body of water and into the bed (196) of the body of water (194) from a superstructure (40), said multi-activity drilling assembly comprising a drilling superstructure (40) operable to be mounted upon a drilling deck (190) for simultaneously supporting drilling operations for a single well and operations auxiliary to drilling operations for the single well;first means (160) connected to said drilling superstructure for advancing tubular members into the body of water (194) and into the bed (196) of said body of water (194);second means (162) connected to said drilling superstructure for advancing tubular members simultaneously with said first means (160) into the body of water 094) and to the bed (396) of said body of water;means positioned adjacent to said first (160) and second (162) means for advancing tubular members for transferring tubular assemblies, including handling means 0 64), (166). between said first means (160) for advancing tubular members and said second means (162) for advancing tubular members to facilitate simultaneous drilling operations and operations auxiliary to said drilling operations for the single weh;wherein at least one driller console (156) or (158) is provided for controlling said drilling operations and operations auxiliary to said drilling operation;;, said at least one console (156 or 158) being operably located generally adjacent to a line ΑΡνΟ 1 2 78 -39extending between said first means (160) for advancing tubular members and said second means (162) for advancing tubular members, and wherein drilling activity is conducted for the single well from said drilling superstructure by said first means (160) for advancing tubular members and auxiliary drilling activity is simultaneously conducted to the bed of the body of water for the single well from said drilling superstructure by said second means (162) for advancing tubular members to shorten the critical timeline for drilling the single well.

A multi-activity drilling assembly, as defined in Claim 8, said multi-activity drilling assembly being further characterized by:a first tubular setback station (170) positioned adjacent to said first means for advancing tubular members (160);and a second tubular setback station (172) positioned adjacent to said second means for advancing tubular members (162).
