Improved device for accurately marking tissue

Abstract

This invention is an improved tissue localizing device for fixedly yet removably marking a volume of tissue containing a suspect region for excision. This invention also encompasses methods for deployment of the localizing device and its excision along with the marked tissue volume. At least one locator element is deployed into tissue and assumes a predetermined curvilinear shape to define a tissue border containing a suspect tissue region along a path. The locator element path preferably encompasses the distalmost portion of the tissue volume without penetrating that volume. Multiple locator elements may be deployed to further define the tissue volume along additional paths defining the tissue volume border that do not penetrate the volume. Other localization wire embodiments of the invention are disclosed in which the tissue volume may be penetrated by a portion of the device. Polar and tangential deployment configurations as well as a locator element that may be cold-formed by a die in the distal portion of the deployment tube into a permanent arcuate shape are also disclosed.

  3. 3
The device of Claim 2, further comprising a second localizer element extending through the lumen and the distal aperture, wherein a distal length of the second localizer element extends away from the distal aperture at a second angle with respect to a proximal length of the second localizer element in the delivery tube, and wherein the distal length of the second localizer element is rotatable with respect to the delivery tube.
  4. 4
The device of Claim 2, wherein the proximal end of the distal length of the first localizer element is pivotably attached to the distal end of the proximal length of the second localizer element.
  5. 5
A tissue localization device comprising:a locator element having a cross-section having a major axis and a minor axis;a rotatable deployment tube with a lumen, wherein the locator element extends through the lumen, and wherein the lumen has an oval cross-section, and wherein the lumen is configured to control the angular orientation of the locator element when passed through the lumen.
  6. 6
The device of Claim 5, further comprising an orientation indicator on the outside of the deployment tube, wherein the indicator indicates the orientation of the major axis and/or the minor axis of the lumen.
  7. 7
The device of Claim 5, wherein the distal terminal end of the deployment tube has distal facets taper at an angle less than 45° at the terminally distalmost length on the deployment tube.
